Portfolio - Disappointed in professional results.

Thanks John, I had not realised that Ilford had discontinued the Galerie Gold Fiber silk. A shame no doubt. B Based on the overwhelming response I think I'll give the Canson Baryta Photographique a shot. I haven't, thanks, that's a goods shout. I haven't been up to Print Space in a few...

    How relevant are light meters?

I used a lightmeter a lot when I was learning to light at University, but in the ensuing years on the job I have barely touched them. Garry's advice posted above is sound. I've not really met anyone that works to ratios, that seems (to me anyway) to be a bit of an instructional crutch. If you...

Any benefit to using a trigger system

Off the top of my head... from a technical perspective: Range issues, ambient light issues (try triggering via the pop up on a very bright day over some distance), line of sight, interference from other flash lighting, draining the main battery on your camera unnecessarily & potentially slowing...

    Light stand from a monopod

Years ago, when I first started messing around with off camera flash I had a play around with a similar setup. I only had the one flashgun to start with, which I duly attached to a cheap Chinese monopod (nice and light) and used a sync cable to trigger the flash. It works, to some extent, but...

Portfolio - Disappointed in professional results.

Hi all. I've recently had a series of new portfolio images printed by my local lab and the results don't seem to stand up to some inkjet prints I did myself a couple of years ago. I don't get involved in printwork at all within my business so I'm a little out of touch. I've not really worried...

    PS CS5 + Nik collection

I have CS5 and the Nik collection on Windows 7, this doesn't happen to me. I'd be surprised if it was a windows 8 issue though. Are you getting two identical layers?

is f:2.8 the way to go?

This. Do you need the zoom range? The two major, real world differences between F4 and F2.8 are price and weight, both in significant quantities. You have to ask yourself whether one more stop of light gathering is worth the difference in weight and price for your work.

    Buying used scanners, cheaply

I trawled carboots for a while and found a lot of stuff that was almost suitable! Gumtree in the end proved to do the trick for me, but a friend of mine managed to pick up an old v500 from a local freecycle group!

    Photographer lost our wedding photos

I've had a couple that exhibited no warning signs at all. That said, I do have a drive in my media rig that has been proffering the "windows detects a hard drive is about to die" message for about 18 months now and it's still going strong. I'm keeping it in there just to see what happens now!

    The quartet

I have to say, I think the editing you've applied is very distracting.

    Baby Photography

Tom, congratulations. I've not done any baby photography commercially, so others may be in a better place to comment, I prefer my subject matter to remain stationary! Any modern camera with a 50mm prime would be more than adequate, so your setup looks great. At the end of the day you are...

    Most slimming lighting/posing for...

Lighting for older or larger people... that's a bit of an open ended question. For example if you look at pictures of somebody like Morgan Freeman they are often lit to emphasise his facial features as he has a sort of "elder statesman" mystique about him. I am going to assume however that you...

50D as back up or 5MkII as new number 1

This is the real difference between the two for most people. Being studio based I've no real need for the extra features of the MKIII, other than the flash sync port. I'm very tempted to save my self a fortune and just buy a hotshoe adapter... or finally go wireless. eek!

    Yet another new laptop thread

I must admit I'm always surprised by the performance I can get my Old Asus K53 with an I3 in it (I forget which one). As stated above I've thrown an SSD in it and upgraded to 8GB of RAM and it does very well for itself. Rather coincidentally your Desktop sounds like a similar spec to mine too!
