That 100mm refers to the focal length of the lens, NOT the minimum focal distance. I suspect you are getting VERY confused here? There are no wide angle converters for DSLR lenses. Only 1.4, or 2X TELE converters, to give you more reach, at the cost of losing light. You get closer, but...

The AA filter, the sensor, the lens, and the photographer, ALL affect the sharpness. There are a LOT of variables.

50mm lens reached optimum with Leica back in about 1947. They are all just minor variations of that formula, so cost next to nothing. OP? Buy a 50D, invest in L glass for THAT, THEN buy a 1D. Forget 5D...
