Thanks Phil. I was a bit intimidated by the fact that there are 600W + heads available on the market. Are those more for on-location stuff where there is a lot of ambient light?
I'm looking to do some portraits with a single strobe with a strip soft box and a reflector. The shoot will take place in a studio but will a 200W head be enough. what do you recommend?

I have used some of the cheap (£25) LEDs and as others have mentioned, the colours they produce are awful and inconsistent. I personally prefer my continuous softboxes in the studio or an off camera flashgun with some light modifiers when on location.
Like Phiggys suggested, you could adapt you Nikon glass to your canon camera if you are doing mostly landscape work as don't really need auto focus. An adapter like this one would do just fine...
I would definitely say that a fast prime like the 50mm 1.8 would help get less noise in your low light pictures and you will find that primes are generally sharper that zooms aswell
