I set mine on infinity, or boost the iso and shine a torch on an object then when focused reset to proper settings
my first attempt, second one i did i had to much distortion and had oval trails:bonk:

Not so much bothered with the plug and socket though, bit of insulation tape should do it. I'm an even bigger cheapskate ;)
my settings are usually
tripod with camera bag hanging off the middle to steady it
bulb mode
30s
continuous with remote release
focus on infinity
up the iso as high as it goes and take a few test shots to test focus
is to 100
fire away for two hours
take 10 shots at the end with the...
ouch!
saw some interesting shots of bats feeding over a guys garden pond with the flashes triggered by such a system. bit too much for water drops imho but with sound triggers etc there is plenty to play with in the future
you really need to spend some dosh
photomatix is my choice, you can try it for free but it puts a big watermark across the results

well just bought a 50d myself and still finding my way round it but my 450 will definately not be consigned to the bin or fleabay. i find the 450 a really nice camera for bugging (macro) and as the 50d does not get on well with my sigma macro flash i will continue using the 450 for that.
i have a trigger setup, consistent results so you have more scope for working on ideas and composition imho
easy to set up and wire it yourself, costs about a tenner from the states

some hard acts to follow in the macro section but well worth the effort trying and doing lots of posting and getting some constructive crit, it really will help you improve. Hat tip to Alby, he has been inspirational to me this year, its been a pleasure looking at his work and trying to reach...
