'Splotches' appear when mounting photo in frame

Ok, so I ordered a glossy 40x30cm print to fill a frame that I bought in a sale. Frame is fine, print is fine, but when I put the two together and push in all of the clamps, what can best be described as a splodge/splotch/spot appears in one area of the picture. It looks similar to when you...

Print slightly too small for mount

I bought a frame with a 12x8 mount from Togsprint (very nice btw), and at the same time had a 12x8 photo printed at DSCL. However, on trying to put the two together, the photo is ever so slightly less wide than the mount, leaving a gap where you can see the backboard. What are my options for...

How to decide which photos to print?

I'd like to get some of my photos printed from the last 12 months or so (taken quite a few of a wide variety of things). In Lightroom I rate all my photos purely on technical quality, or the quality of the content - and then from the 'goods' I flag a selection that I could show to anyone (eg in...

    RAW versus JPEG for motorsport

RAW files will generally look poorer than JPG to start with, as JPG have an amount of contrast, saturation etc processing applied to them in camera that you have to do yourself with RAW. I use JPG for sports as it means the camera buffer isn't filled as quickly, and it makes the PC respond...

Digital Photographer magazine totally missing the point

sRGB is a reduced colour space mainly designed for the web. So if you wanted to test a monitor that can supposedly deliver a very wide range of colours you'd wanted to use RGB or a different colour space that would actually have that information in!

Focus speed - camera or lens?

Yep both will make a difference. A better camera will have a more sophisticated algorithm/processor for deciding on the focus - and a better lens will be able to adjust its focus ring more quickly. As to what makes the most difference I don't know...

    Sun-rays...

If you can see them with you eyes the camera can pick it up too! Post processing can help by making them stand out more, but I wouldn't have said there's any particularly special technique, make sure you don't blow the highlights too much and possibly use HDR.

    blurry images on pc

The camera screen is quite a bit smaller than the PC monitor so pics normally look deceptively sharp. You need to zoom in to 100% really to check sharpness on the camera, is there any guide as to how zoomed you are when looking at images?

Photo feedback verses advice on kit. Which do you give.

I will only post on kit if I've actually got experience of it, which as I own Samsung/Pentax isn't that often on here (as well as me only ever using one body and a couple of lenses!). I'm no expert on photos or art either, but at least that's less definitive than kit stuff so I don't normally...

    In-camera sharpening. Does it work?

Could always try it for yourself, on mine you can set it to sharpen less as well as more, so take the same photo at two extremes and see if you can notice! I'd imagine in camera stuff to 'probably' be inferior to doing it yourself on the pc where you have control over the parameters.

Calling All Pentax & Samsung Users!!!!!!!

GX10 for me, cashback deal at the time made it quite a bit cheaper than the Pentax. Still got the kit lenses a year later, just looking to get the 55-300 to give myself a bit more reach, other than that been very happy with it!

£1500-£1800 to spend, what would you recommend?

If you wanted to upgrade the camera you could go for a K20D, that will leave you a good £1000 to spend on lenses.

    Manual v. Automatic

I use Av 95% of the time, but manual has had it's uses, for instance shooting a neon lit street at night, where in Av it just couldn't get the exposure right. For most photos the camera gets the exposure right, and if not then with digital you have the ability to tweak it anyway.
