Oh i really wish i could have done A level in photography. my school didn't that a lot of choices, they didn't even have IT!
am 27 now and started last year, this might sound stupid but would an a level be worth doing at all??
I think the main points have been covered but here it is again.
- Sensor size
- Lens quality
- Auto Focus
the megapixels really comes last and becomes irrelevent when it goes beyond 10MP.
Infact the more pixels you have within the same sensor size could introduce more noise in the image...
What do you do about lens flare? i use a hood already but still get the odd unpleasant flare when shooting in direct sunlight.
Are there methods to avoid this and how to post process this if not?
I think you're worrying too much about the distinction between primes and zooms, it's not about prime or zoom it's more about what focal length you prefer to use with your style of shooting.

Perhaps you should set the ISO manual so it doesn't auto adjust (assuming it is on auto iso)
Then you can experiement with different aperture without ISO going up too high to make the shots grainy.
As said above, they are 2 different things for very different purpose.
You should see what kind of workflow you currently have and how much editing you intend to do.
I'm on one of those who love LR because of its so easy and managable =)

I have a second hand 350D and bought a Tamron 17-50 VC which i'm quite happy with.
But I would try get a second hand non-vc one for about £200.
