My daughter has a Canon 500D. Its a lovely camera. She has had it several years.

It currently has the kit lens on it.

She likes to take pics of anything! Everything is fair game for her....

What would be a good step up in lens quality for her? She wants a better zoom lens. Budget prob around £200....used would be fine. Ta

Lens to cover the same range as the kit lens or a telephoto?

You might have seen Rockwell's comment in his 500D review. He wasn't mad about the 18-55 IS and got better results from the 18-200 IS, although that might be a bit heavy for a walk around.

Up to £164 on MPB

But he also gave the older Nikon 28-200 a good write-up, and it's a complete pile of fetid dingos kidneys.

When I had Canon APS-C I bought a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and I was very impressed with it. I think that a used one of those or the similar Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 could be a significant move up in quality from a kit lens and the f2.8 would give her more opportunity for low light or shallower DoF shooting.

Personally I'd stay away from full frame lenses like the 24-105mm f4 for two reasons. Firstly 24mm isn't anywhere near as wide on APS-C as 17/18mm and f4 is rather limiting. It does have a longer zoom though and although you can get longer range lenses like 18-200mm etc for APS-C I think the 17/18mm f2.8's could give something extra with their additional optical quality and f2.8 aperture.

Good luck choosing.

She wants a longer zoom....

Another vote for the Canon 24-104.

My walkabout lens too even if it does suffer from a bit of creep (repaired a couple of years ago but still does it)

NOT a Canon user but a lover of f/4 walkabout zooms. In may case it's the Nikkor 24-120 f/4. I use the 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 when I'm using the Fuji system.
