Hi All,
After reading and watching some you tube vids I think I found out why my images may not have been what I expected, most likely shutter shock as a lot of them were indoors, I have taken a shed load of images in mech shutter and efcs both with Nikon VR on and off and found indoor images and outdoor are much sharper with VR on and using efcs, even up to the 1/2000 limit.
I had bought the 50mm 1.8s lens and now have that on my camera and prefer it over the 24-70, it seems that i can use the efcs up to 1/2000 then in bright light change to mechanical for anything above.
I did try the auto function but prefer to set it myself as I think it works better but that may just be my old eyes, I'm also making myself use the manual settings which is going a lot better now, I've been testing it mainly in darker areas at 1/100 with auto iso on and its great, I even took some shots at 1/50 (static) and they looked great too but I still think images at 12800 iso are just too noisy so may lower my max to 6400 and see. I have my grand daughters christening in a few weeks so will need to visit the church to take images and see what the lighting is like and if it causes any problems with the efcs.
Hopefully I may have helped some one that has been in this boat, I'm now more than happy with the Z6.
