So finally, a week after the theme was announced, I have made my decision on the image I am going to use. The reasons for the delay were somewhat convoluted but I shall try to explain.

Firstly, I wanted to start the 52 with something a bit unusual, something I wouldn't normally do and when the subject was announced my initial thoughts were along the lines of 'plenty of scope then'

However, New Years Day was also the day a decided to give up smoking, or at least try. My target is to be able to afford a Nikon 70-200VR and maybe a D700 before the year is out, without resorting to hitting the credit cards [for credit, as opposed to for security of purchase, if that makes sense]. So, bearing in mind my 20 a day habit, it was time to have a go. I should point out that I had given up for 2 1/2 years in the early part of the last decade too, so I make no firm promises to myself or anyone else. Nor did I want one of those public 'support' threads, its not my thing. I think mentioning it here is probably only happening now because I am a week in and feel a bit more confident, but I still do not want and have no intentions of, this becoming some sort of quite smoking blog - this is about photography :D [anyone want some gum and inhalator refills, I have bought the best thing ever, an electronic ciggie]

So I had to find something to start filling the spare time. The weather has been pants and I had an Amazon gift voucher that needed spending. So I bought a slide and neg scanner because I do use film from time to time and because we have a loft full of slides from my OH's childhood. His father was a well travelled sort and some of his pictures may crop up in here again.

This one was taken in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1963 - I posted a sister shot a few days ago as I wasn't sure of location, and John [2blue4u] filled in the details, though Yves Geza had also remembered by then too *insert the rolling eyed smiley we don't have here* - The hotel is the Hotel Marian Palace, a feast of curved frontage and still standing today [ details here ] and you can see the curve of the balconies in the shot. Looking down towards what I always think of as being 'very American' - the corner building with the curved edge in the junction of the two streets, though of course you see it in every country.

The other reason this fits in with the curved theme is the full circle in which it has all come - we have figured out the picture was taken with a Kodak Retinette 1b, a 1960 model Pa-in-Law bought to take to the Rome Olympics. [He was probably in Brazil for the Pan American Games] and the exact same camera I am now using to film shots with [ Image ] and one of the several I have and the reason I wanted a neg scanner for :D

Anyway, enough of my rambling on for one week, here is the picture and a promise that next weeks will be one taken by me ;)

Note: from what I can see on Google Earth, most of the buildings are still standing, some of the streets have been pedestrianised and you can still book to stay at the Hotel Marian Palace

tis a good picture :) Great start even if it is a little fiddled :nono::rules:

Oh and although you want a photography thread, good luck on the non smoking. As you said, think of where the money could go to!!:clap:

Woo-hoo!! You decided to join in then?!!....well, kind of!!:D

Those slides are coming along nicely I see, looking forward to following this 52! Good luck Yv!!

As said, a great shot, even if you do need to borrow Conor's crowbar :D... Wonderful curves through that shot. Good luck with the not smoking

My god look at all the traffic it's rush hour!

It actually looks like a candidate for one of those model tiltshift photos. I don't really think using this photo in your 52 is even legal :) I'm sure you could find something to enter of your own work Yvonne even at this late stage. Technically taking photos of other peoples photos may be a little considered a little :naughty:

I am of course looking forward to some of your own shots as you go through this year.

School Report : Must try harder :exit:

Best of luck with the giving up smoking.

Ahem!! To paraphrase Simon - my 52, my rules!! :p

...and I said all along I would be joining, I just had so many ideas running round about what to do with curved that finally the full circle thing seemed the logical choice for the first image, so ner ne neh neeerrrrr!

*hangs on to crowbar*

Run for cover!!!!

*hangs on to crowbar*

*searches pockets....*

Here!

Crowbar.gif

hrmmm... think we need to design a new crowbar!

Excellent photo all the same :) and you're spot on, your 52, your rules ;)

 OK anyone wanting to borrow the crowbar for next week's theme - it's round at Yv's ;)

TBH though I'm actually going to defend your choice. The photo is bang on theme and you got some use from your new scanner to bring one of your father in law's shots to life. The reason that most of us are doing this is to encourage us to do something new, so IMO it fits  (although I think you're stretching it a bit with the full circle explanation :p )

It's a fascinating image. Really takes you back in time - Just look at those cars!
What I'd absolutely love to see is a current image taken from exactly the same location to be able to compare the two. I guess taking a quick trip over to Brazil to get one of your 52 shots is out of the question though?

Looking forward to seeing the rest of your project

Before I read your post I thought maybe you'd just processed this to look 1960's :) Must be fascinating to see that little bit of history and have a story to go with it.

Good luck finding time to take the next 51 yourself ;) And very best of luck with the stopping smoking (from someone who's done it many times himself).

Lovely image Yv and it has a real timeless quality somehow - almost reminds me of an early 20th century vision of a future city (rambling I know but I get me :D) an interesting start to your 52 :) (note: must get a slide scanner!)

Very curvy indeed - I do like it, mainly because it's a look back in history - to a time well before I was born ;)

Look forward to seeing what you come up with for the Poetry round!

Thankyou again for the additional comments. For anyone that enjoys images from the past, I have started a set on my flickr HERE of some of the stuff I have scanned and where possible place names and years. Feel free to have a look ;) Apologies for the quality, I have not edited them in any way other than to resize and the scanner doesn't allow much leaway. My main aim atm is to get everything on, then I will spend some time putting the sentimental and interesting stuff through CS to improve them.

However, on with the more important things. Poems and poetry are really NOT my thing, I didn't enjoy it at school and nothing has really happened since to change my mind. I do know though that such a theme might as well be titled 'open round' because I am about 99% certain you could take any picture and find a poem somewhere to suit, hence I was quite pleased when Simon pulled this one out for week 2.

Following the use of the crowbar and some artistic licence in week 1 though, I decided not to take this course and did actually spend sometime yesterday afternoon looking through poems to find something that appealed. Bearing in mind the weather as well. I found several I wanted to try and may yet do, in fact I have one I also shot today that I may well add to Johns [Dark Stars] poetry thread, but the one I chose for the 52 is William Blake's The Sick Rose. 9pm last night saw me trundling round Tesco for a few bits of food stuff and a bunch of roses

Anyway, here we go.

The Sick Rose

4264009056_40c6675647_o.jpg

O Rose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm
That flies in the night,
In the howling storm,

Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

Now I suspect Mr Blake wasn't actually talking about a rose, I pressume its a metaphor, or maybe not, I don't know, but my own take on it is the dying shrivelling rose on the virginal white snow.

Disclaimer: Only 1 rose was hurt in the making of this image, it was hung for 18 hours on a radiator. ;) Exif intact to prove I did actually shoot it today :p

Week 1 nice use of the crow bar, very interesting shot lots to look at.

Week 2 another great combination well put together. Nice use of DOF with the rose.

Great image Yv, love the depth of field and the muted colours...and it matches the poem beautifully (some of these could happily sit in my poems and pictures threads :))

The little disclaimer tickled me, nice that. Interesting image too, great DoF and framing. It makes me want to go and have a got at something similar with a fresh rose, and any image that inspires someone is a good image IMO.

Week 1 - love that picture! And it has really made me want a slide scanner to raid my Dad's old pics of my childhood holidays. Can I ask which one you went for?

Week 2 - I find this to be a very thought provoking image personally. I think perhaps, it's that it fits the poem perfectly, and I find both the poem and rose sad to look at. Might have to wander off and ponder that some more.....

Fab start to your 52 - wish I'd have thought to sign up to the challenge too - there's always next year!

Thanks John, will post my alternative to your poetry thread in next day or two ;)

If it inspires you, then all the better, thanks squawk

Answer 1 - a Veho - dead simple and cheap [pc compatible only] and does the job.

Answer 2 - watdaya mean 'next year'? DO IT NOW! There is nothing to stop you starting now, nothing to stop you doing weeks 1 and 2 and playing catch up as you go along. Go on! do it, you know you want to :D

Lovely start to the 52 Yv. Can already see the effort you are putting in! Especially Roseicide!

Look forward to keeping up to date with your work!

Love the rose pic. Goes perfectly with the poem.

I like this lots.
The lighting is soft (but not too much, the dof is spot on and it realy does look like the rose i pictured when I read the poem.

Cracking image, DOF is spot on and it fits the theme well too.

Yv...am going to have to go back and chose a new Poet and Poem now.....Spent Sunday looking at different poets and poems till me little 'ol 'ead hurt. After hours of searching settled on exactly the same as you, was going to sort it tomorrow. Oh well, back to the books again tonight........

Nice Image portrayal of the Rose.

Hi Yv,

my first thought was, poor rose 18 hours on a radiator thats gota hurt, seriously though - simply beautiful.

Excellent! Bang on theme, and the photo really suits the poem . Just hope mine turns out as well :)

Brilliant Yv.

Certainly no use of the crowbar this week (I may need to borrow it though :suspect: )

Superb image that really goes with your chosen poem
