The Canon for me!! I have a slightly older Ixus model - the 80, that i bought shortly before my DSLR and have to say its an impressive lil piece of kit for the money!!

All of the mentioned camera have a 28mm min focal length - so should all be pretty much the same for close ups - unless you want macro, the closest youll get focus with the Fuji is 5cm away for the object, 10cm for the Sony! Canon hasnt got it - how close up will you be shooting??
The canon has a x12 opitcal zoom - far superior to the other two with x5
Making the max focal length (zoom) on the Canon 336mm compared to 140mm - although, once compact cameras get up to the longer lengths they cant cope, especially in the Digital zoom

Canon for user interface too (well over the Sony anyways), as I had a Cybershot before my Canon Ixus - it got damaged shortly after I got it and got a refund and replaced with the Canon - far superior in every way!!

Hope this helps!!

we keep a lot of reptile both lizards and snakes and would love to be able to pick up scale detail on both.

so would i need macro to do this ?

we know sod all about camera's to be honest

Have you thought of picking up a 2nd hand DSLR - if you are considering doing a bit of shooting!!
Best investment I've made - and having fun learning how to shot properly - that is not in Auto Mode ;)
Its also nice to have a decent camera at family occassions even if you arent the best photographer in the world!!

I have an Panasonic FZ28, the previous model to the FZ35, and I think its a great camera. Its very versatile with full auto, full manual and shutter apature priority. If you get into photography theres lots of scope if you dont want to go the whole hog and get a DSLR, Its a halfway house between a compact and a DSLR. It also has a macro setting and gets good reviews in that area (within its class of course) You can also add a specialised macro or telephoto lens if you wish.

Whichever camera you are considering, go to flickr.com and use the group search function to look at the picture quality before you buy.
