I have been shooting for about 4 years and have a good understanding of photography, exposure, composition etc and im going to shoot some weddings (free to start with then cheap until i get a great portfolio built up, clients will be made fully aware of my level of skill/experiance) I currently shoot with Nikon d300s,Nikon 18-55 kit, nikon 50mm f1.8, nikon 70-210 afd f3.5-5.6, tamron 28-75 f2.8 and 2 flash's. My question is all the photographers i aspire to shoot canon now i dont care canon or nikon but i dont have a great big budget so if i sell all my nikon gear i could buy a s/h canon 5d, 20d, 24-105 f4 is and a 50mm f1.4 prime.
Would you stick with the d300s and sell some len's to buy better ones or get rid and go with the s/h canon kit ?

thanks

Who cares what other people shoot? If you've been using Nikon for 4 years and have been happy with the results, there's no point in switching over now. It's not like it'll magically push you over to the next level. Plus you already have a sizeable lens (and flash) collection. Selling it all to switch to Canon just seems like a huge hassle.

It doesn't matter about the gear it's about the photographers ability to pre-visualise and carry out the image. I'd say you've got some good gear but what makes you think you're ready for weddings especially if your charging?

Have you got any clients already because otherwise you may say you want to do cheap weddings but you may never ever get a client due to marketing reasons.

Have you got a decent website?
Have you got appropriat advertising material?
Have you accounted for costs etc and included this into the pricing to work out how much average profit you can make?
Have you got appropriate organising/editing software?
Have you got a good computer?
Have you got back up body?
Have you got back up lenses?
Have you got back up memory cards?
Have you got back up flashguns?
etc.

There's a lot more to it than saying you're going to do it I'm afraid. You will preferably need a full frame body so get a d700 and use the d300s as a backup camera also.

I personally don't think that swapping your D300 for a Canon will improve your shots and although I use and love my 20D I'm amazed that you're thinking of ditching your Nikon for a Canon line up including one.

Time for a rethink and look towards mild tweeking of your lens line up and a Nikon backup body maybe?
