Any suggestions on books on photography? I am looking for some good reading. Something to improve photography, tips, advanced topics, inspirational. Whats your favorite one?

There are 3 that I refer to on a regular basis - Michael Langford's Basic Photography, Tom Ang's Digital Photography and I forget the authors' names but the book is called the 35mm photographer's Handbook.

Langford is very dry and my edition is from the days of film but then again, so am I! No mention of digital but more modern editions do cover it.

Tom Ang's book covers almost all aspects of digital photography, from composition to PP techniques.

The 35mm Photographer's Handbook touches briefly on digital but concentrates (as the title suggests) on 35mm. A lot of it is also applicable to digital but there are chapters on film choice and developing, wasted reading for the purely digital shooter, although of interest from an historical perspective.

None of my favourite photography books have anything to do with technique. They're all books of collections of photographs or about more nebulous concepts such as vision (Within The Frame by David DuChemin is highly recommended).

If you do a search there are dozens of threads on good books on technique, these normally recommend Scott Kelby's, Michael Freeman's and Bryan Petersons books.

For inspiration, National Geographic's The Photographs is one of the very few I keep flicking through.

Probably not for advanced tog's but I got a book yesterday called 'From Snapshots To Great Shots' by Jeff Revell from Amazon. It's specific to the camera I'll be getting (Canon 600D) so is very beneficial to me. I think they do them for most camera's though.

It goes from the extreme basics through to fairly advanced use and at the end of every chapter there are assignments that allow you to put the theory to practice.

I have that book and its pretty good if your like me and can not read a manual to save your life. To me manuals are of very little help for beginners that don't necessarily have the knowledge of what certain functions are used for. The book explains the functions in a practical way and shows you how to set it up. So I think you will enjoy it.

I agree, the manual tells you what the functions are but not when and how to use them.

I'm just waiting for my camera to arrive then I can play properly. However, just reading it without the camera is very enlightening :)
