The Strobist has an interesting interview with Canadian photographer Joey Lawrence, a 17-year-old who travels the world with his Canon EOS 5D and Speedlite flashes, creates educational tutorials on DVD and has agents in London and New York.

don't want to sound like a grumpy old man (voice off: too late)
but how does a 17 year old get to do that?
difficult to believe he has enough history to have a sponsor?
and if he does - on what grounds? - there must be more deserving cases (within this very forum for a start)
is he just a rich kid burning daddy's (or mummy's) deep pockets?

please not sour grapes - I just want to understand

well worth a read and a look through his site, some really good stuff

I can't get away from that kid! He was all over dpchallenge when I used to hang around there, and the short answer as to how he's got to do all that ... he's good and he's gone out and done it.

He made a name for himself with his strong processing style and started selling DVDs teaching people how to do it. I wouldn't be surprised if that alone paid for the 5D.

Sure, but I tend to agree with mmcp42 here. How does a 17 yr old get to travel the world anyhow...? certainly needed Daddies money to start off.

I am sure he is very good, in fact some of the images I looked at on his site are brilliant, but given sponsorship and equipment these could be achieved by many deserving folk on here. I have no axe to grind here with this kid and wish him well, but one can't accomplish what he has with talent alone.

Well I dunno. He certainly didn't milk daddy for his camera. He built up his rep on dpchallenge using a pro-sumer Minolta cam while the rest of us were shelling out on DSLRs & lenses (and still not producing work as good as his).

He made a *lot* of friends on dpc (and still hangs out there). If he did get daddy to fund his start in the business then good on him for using the money to start a career in something that he's ridiculously good at, rather than doing what most rich kids seem to do.

I still have a feeling that he's achieved most of it through EFFORT though. How many of you have produced your own tutorial DVD's and successfully sold them worldwide at £150 a pop?

Sold them to rich people too at that price eh! I wouldn't pay that ridiculous amount of money for a DVD, but good luck to him.

I'm neither a cheapskate, nor a Northerner (nowt wrong with Northerners though)... however, I still wouldn't pay anywhere near £150 for a DVD and I'd like to find someone who has.

If you do find someone who has it seee if you can borrow it then let me have a peek at it please

Bob

£150 for a DVD, is it magic:eek: ? hmmm i wan't to learn but i may aswell use that amount of money to put towards a course or somethin....
I do like his work and i can see why he's got a good rep, but tbh it would be quite hard to start off a career in photography without some kind of funding:thinking:....

I think he sold his first DVD at £30 a pop but don't quote me on that. Not something you really need to do if you already have funding I wouldn't have thought. I know he sold plenty of copies, with no advertising outlay, over at dpc.

So imagine what 100 sales could get you? 200?

I've known of this guy since he was 14 and never got the impression he had money behind him (in fact quite the opposite, I believe he promoted the first DVD on the basis that he needed to raise funds for better gear).

I'm not even all that keen on his style - a bit too heavy on the processing for my taste - but I don't like the assumption that any kid who gets off his arse and does something with his life must have rich parents backing him - it just gives other kids an excuse not to try.

Good on him I say, if you can get to travel the world taking some great looking photos then so be it :D

Nope, ive got two years to be were he is. But i dont really know how to go about it...but ive got two years to do that :p:lol:
Hmmm

You don't really pay for a dvd, you are paying for the information. In the same way someone does not hesitate to pay hundreds of pounds for Photoshop which comes on CD/DVD.

For the cynics amongst you it might be worth you heading back to the strobist site to check out the review of the DVD which explains to you why it isn't the same price as your favourite copy of pretty woman.

I have nothing but respect for the lad. Where he got the money to start is largely irrelevant but I finished reading his interview wanting to buy the DVD, so my guess is he earnt it.
