In an attempt to improve our rudimentary photography skills, my girlfriend and I have embarked on a weekly photo competition, based on consecutive alphabetic themes. The challenge being to take photo's that are technically competent and that stretch us creatively.

We alternate each week who chooses the theme, which has to begin with the next letter of the alphabet. We have one week to complete, prior to sharing, but thought that external review from fellow TP'ers would also be helpful.

And so onto this week's theme - Keys

please let us have any feedback, critique, or just vote which you prefer

As always, thanks for looking, all feedback appreciated, or just a quick vote via the poll

Thanks to all that have viewed, commented and voted on the previous weeks theme's

First I thought 'Keys', plural, but then there is a 'key' and its shadow . . . offering some poetic licence?

The Piano keys are a little bland for me, I could visualise a pair of hands would help with some drama, about to or striking a cord?

The turnkey is equally bland . . . although the shadow/lighting helps, a little more scope with the angles?

I have them as a dead heat . . .

No.2 has it for me

Personally i think No. 1 is under exposed and would benefit from a shallower DOF, No.2 on the other hand i lit really well and has great clarity and contrast - it makes an interesting image.

I love the different interpretations of the same theme so well done to you both!

Whilst no1 could be deemed as a little bland, I have to say I do like the simplicity and the clean image. The reflection is nice and I like the DoF.

My first impression of no 2 is that it is quite striking. The shadow is good and I like the angle of it. It is a very clean shot and there is almost a slight HDR-type effect on the actual key itself if you see what I mean? I think whilst the image appears quite simple, i suspect it may have taken some time to get right in order that it was clean with no clutter/debris on the material the key is resting on...and getting it to stay upright could of caused problems i reckon!

to that end, I vote for no2, but it was a close thing for me!

Thanks for the feedback Sam, very much appreciated

hope you had a chance to check out the rest of the series :), we are approaching half way, L will be 'Listening'.

Already thinking about themes for Q, V, W, X & Y

Cheers, M

thanks for the feedback Christine, and for the helpful suggestions ;)

i will show my ignorance and divulge i had to look up the definition of Xat. Here's what i found :)

xat

Pronunciation: (khät), [key]
—n.
a carved totem pole of various North American Indian peoples.

Now, living in the Midlands, this will certainly be a challenge

Too close to judge on photographic skills - yes, #1 may be a little dark but IMO, that adds to the moodiness rather than detracting from the overall image.

My first thought on seeing the thread title was Quays, so I was pleased to see some imagination from one of the contestants in going for something other than a bunch of keys. Based purely on that, #1 has my vote.

BTW, what's the score so far? In only one or two instances have you revealed which is your shot and which is from your GF.

Thanks for the feedback and voting Nod, much appreciated.

I have deliberately not listed who's photo belongs to who, as i didn't want any chance of non photo based factors affecting viewer's perception. May (once challenge is complete) do a final review, possibly including shots that didn't make the cut, scoring run down etc. That's if we haven't outstayed our welcome by then ;)

thanks again,

M

Possible sugestions for your letters could be:

Quiver, Vehicle, Water, X-ray & Yuk (think you could have lots of fun with that one!)

I have said before that I really like what you are doing....would you mind if I borrowed your idea of photographing along the alphabet in the future? I really need to push myself into taking shots of different things and just getting out there with the cam?!

Hi Sam - thanks for the suggestions, feedback and encouragement . Feel free to use the theme, we certainly borrowed it from previous users :D

Cheers,

M

For me, number two has it

Number one: It's a little underexposed and could do with a shallower depth of field, perhaps on the foreground, with the back blurring a little more. The reflection of the keys seems to be a little cut off, leaving me unsure whether they're just there because of the way the picture is framed. I would suggest either a closer focus on the keys themselves and minimise the amount of reflection, or pulling out a little to catch some symmetry of the keys and their reflection.

The second is very focussed, clear and crisp. The only possible improvement suggestion I would make would be to shift the light source slightly clockwise, to give the shadow a little more length in the foreground. But that's a matter of personal taste. All in all, a very nice capture.

I am really enjoying this challenge.

I would also hazard a guess that the person who took the second shot, also took the second Jack Daniels photo in the 'Jack' challenge :)

Keep up the good work people!
