In an attempt to improve our rudimentary photography skills, my girlfriend and I have embarked on a weekly photo competition, based on consecutive alphabetic themes. The challenge being to take photo's that are technically competent and that stretch us creatively

We alternate each week who chooses the theme, which has to begin with the next letter of the alphabet. We have one week to complete, prior to sharing, but thought that external review from fellow TP'ers would also be helpful.

and this now brings us up to date on the weekly challenges, this week's theme was Dark.

please let us have any feedback, critique, or just which you prefer ;)

next week's theme to be decided on, so there will be a little break in posting, but thanks again for any feedback or response

I think No.2 could do with just a little more light (even though the subject is 'dark') but is the better of the 2 images. No.1 just looks out of focus and under exposed I'm afraid.

thanks Nick - agree it was a fine balance on the lighting front

it looks better at full size, when there is more of the lit subject on screen :D

thanks again,

M

2nd one by a mile, though I would turn the bottle slightly so you could see the whole word "black."

I would also move the bottle about 1/4 bottle to the centre of the frame thereby positioning the lit part of the bottle on a rule of thirds. As is is, it looks a little squashed...

Cheers guys, and thanks for constructive feedback - every day is a school day😄.

Enjoying it so far as it pushing me to think differently about creating an image instead of just taking a photograph, ooh get me!😳

I am seriously liking the idea of you & GF competing against each other and trying to come up with the best pics, as well as taking on board TP'ers comments / thoughts and whether choosing to / not to follow their advice... (to be honest you'll agree with some, disagree with others as such a subjective hobby - I have listened and learned , I have listened and ignored)....

Why not once in so many weeks, allow a random poster to suggest a topic for next week.. could be something really abstract / odd to test you or could be something really simple... just a thought...

Thanks Lynton - may well take up the 'open floor theme' suggestion, but might need to develop a bit more creativity first.

Might be ready by about 'Q' i should say

Cheers,

M

#1, too soft.

#2 has its faults but in a weird way, they almost make the picture! Rule of thirds is too often slavishly followed and I usually prefer subjects to be inside the thirds line rathr than outside. #1's softness means #2 gets the vote.
