Yes
I'm used to taking my family back 'home' South of the border but (being a Red Rose man) I'm now venturing into Yorkshire  for a few days.

Any tips or advice ?

Helmsley (never been there before) is where we're going.

Staying here.....

Anybody know the area ?

You'll be fine, as long as nobody finds out that you're from the wrong side of the Pennines
If you have an accent, just pretend to be mute.
If your car reg number gives you away, buy a personalised plate before you go.
If anyone suspects you, just pretend to be an international terrorist pretending to be a Lancastrian, you'll be made more welcome.

Helmsley is a nice rural area, surrounded by 20th generation Yorkshire farmers with shotguns under their arms, I'm sure they won't disappoint you.

:)

Cheers Gary

From what you've said - I wish I could set off now  although your avatar has me slightly concerned.

We're down for a wedding with a few days either side.

Really looking forward to a few days away - seems an age since we've been somewhere 'new'.

Certainly looks a nice area from what I've seen - any good photo locations nearby ?

Plenty of good photo locations nearby, including the ruins of the castle built for defence against Lancastrians. It's a nice area, hilly of course, which led to bad floods there a few years ago.

Don't worry about my avetar, it's a joke that I put up because certain people on here were sniping at me. Of course I do have a few shotguns - 5 I think - but I'm more of a rifle shooter. We need to take care of pest control in Yorkshire:)

Fountains Abbey

North Yorkshire Moors Railway (from Pickering to Grosmont)

Whitby

Robin Hood's Bay

York Minster (and much more in York) - use Park & Ride

National Railway Museum also in York

All within about half an hour to an hour

Cheers folks - I'll look them up......

If you're taking kids, my parents took us to an excellent place in York called Jorvik which is a museum of a different kind to the dreary ones! It is all about the Vikings who controlled York for a long period of time. It is ewally good for about an hour or two to escape the rain!

Yep - 3 kids - 11, 2 and 12 weeks. The eldest might enjoy that

Take something that smells nice your going to need it after Jorvik :) Also kids that age will love the national railway museum and its free these days if I remember right

Other than the usual mentioned above there is always Scarborough - castle, harbour, beaches, etc or Bridlington - same but without the castle.

Given your user name, if you are hungry I would thoroughly recommend the Denison Arms at East Ayton (YO13 9HL) just outside Scarborough on the road to/from Helmsley. Not much to look at from the outside but really friendly inside and as for the food..... put it this way you'll not get more on your plate anywhere else. Photographically you could always take a picture of the empty plate (if you get to empty it). :)

a brolly is a must at the moment.

agreed , its been miserable round here for the last few days , deffo check whitby out , dont bother with scarboro though , its a s***hole :gag:

Thanks folks - we're fairly used to rain.
