North England York 3 day trip

Away on holiday to york on the second week of july and looking for some good places for photo's.

Only issues are I will have the family (wife +2 5 and under) and no car as we are going by train.

Any ideas appreciated.
Is york fine for wandering at night alone with my camera? we are staying in a flat in the centre area.
I've never been to york or south of the border for that matter since I was a lot younger,and currently live in one of the safest towns I've been to, most likely to encounter golf tourists or posh students here.
 
Never had any issue in York during day or night but I'd be tempted to about weekend evenings.

The Shambles. York Minster and this is a cracker - I could have spend a full day on this museum.

The National Railway Museum is worth a visit, my 2 boys (4 and 8) love it there, and it's free entry.

It can be boisterous at nights weekends, otherwise a very safe place - in the main touristy areas anyway.
The city walls are great for elevated views and leading lines, you might take a trip on the river too.
 
It's fine, I live just at the back of the minster and spend a lot of time out at night and it is pretty safe. Around Swinegate, Coney Street and Micklegate get a little boisterous at night but nothing too much.

The minster is well worth a visit, I'm one of the photographers there and it is amazing. They're cool about photography, tripods etc too, which makes a change. The shambles is worth a photo, there are some nice shots to be had of the river, there is a section of the bar walls opposite the Aviva building near the railway station which gives a nice view of the minster and the road up to it, the railway museum is well worth a visit etc etc.

Railway museum is good, but you will need flash, half the lamps were out when went in February!
