Completely agree.I'll go against the grain here and say that I bought one on a whim a while ago and it was actually slightly sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.8 at wider apertures - I'd still have it and happily use it if it hadn't met an unfortunate end due to an encounter with a brick wall. Seems quality control is nonexistent though and some are pretty terrible, so they're only really worth buying if you either get a good one from the start, or are prepared to return a few.
I'd not recommend buying one, but did enjoy the one I had, if that makes any sense at all!
Assuming your going to have it on a crop body I personally wouldn't want a 50mm as a general purpose lens I had one as the only lens on my 30d for a while and found it very frustrating! I'd be looking at the 24mm STM pancake on a crop a lovely lens a great general purpose field of view equivalent and not particularly expensive stick it on a used 450d and you have a great cheap dslr setup!
Something to think about as missus is after a canon dslr & she takes photos of everything just walking around with the kids ...
Old 450d and the 24mm STM would be pretty good for that I quite often take my m and 22mm out with my son.
If it was full frame the 50 would be OK but for me it's pretty limiting on a crop it's just to long.
60d is a nice camera much maligned at the time of release as it effectively killed the xxd as a prosumer range but it has some nice features as isn't to bulky.
