Yes
At the last event I shot a videographer came over and asked what the red mesh looking thing that was beaming from my flash was and I had no idea what he was talking about. Ten minutes later I was framing a shot and sure enough I seen it for myself through the lens.... It was a red mesh/net pattern at least a foot wide on my subject

Any ideas what it is? My guess was some sort of focus assist but it just looked so strange.

I bet that pleased the videographer

if your focus point is set to the centre of the frame, and on nikon, the focus mode set to AF-S, then some flashes project a red grid to help the camera focus in low light. It works very well. May annoy videographers, but no more than the flash...

you can disable it in the menu of the camera and sometimes in the functionality of the flash too.
it will also be disabled if you have auto focus tracking, as Dave mentioned above. It will only with single point focus, no AI focus or servo assisted (on canon cameras)
it should come out as a mesh or pattern of dots.

Which flash is it?

Edit. "The AF-assist beam firing setting is located in the External flash C.Fn setting under the flash control menu.".
So is that on the flash or the body Graham? Cheers!
