Hi all I'm looking to get into flash photography, but there is so much choice in options that I'm getting a little stuck. I've been through the search pages here and still cannot find the answer I'm after.

I basically want to know if it the YN622's that control the sync speeds or the flashes. I'd like to try some strobist stuff but I'm not sure which flash to start with. I'd like to have the YN622's as they add some versatility and would also like to do off camera.

I'm using a 450D right now but I'm also looking at a used 1D mark III. Would I be better going straight for the 568EX or am I able to start with the 565EX III and add to the system later.

Many thanks.

The camera controls the shutter speed. The gun just flashes and an E-TTL trigger just tells it how to flash (power, mode etc) and when, on instructions from the camera.

TN 622 is a good choice, and all I would say about the gun is that it's a good plan to have at least one high spec gun that will do everything, including High Speed Sync. You can save on extra remote guns, as basic manual power control for those is often the preferred option.

Thanks HoppyUK, so the YN568EXII would be the way to go then and add other flashes when needed.

I did hear that the YN622's could make the YN560's sync at 1/8000, does this sound correct?

YN568 sounds right - not 100% sure without checking model numbers.

The YN622 will fire any suitable gun at 1/8000sec in HSS mode but the gun must be HSS capable. There is another trick for syncing at high shutter speeds with any gun, properly called tail-hypersync (not sure what YN calls it). But that technique has some downsides like uneven exposure down the frame, only works at full flash power in manual, and no E-TTL control. All techniques for syncing above the normal x-sync ceiling (1/200sec on a 450D) waste lots of power so range is reduced and recycle times increased.
