Yongnuo 622. Looking at alternative to Pocket Wizard Flex

I have been using a Pocket Wizard flex system, but have been looking at the Yongnuo 622's for a couple of reasons, mainly price, but I have a couple of questions.

Can these control an 430ex original?

How is the interference issue? I have US frequency Flex system and it is a pig with my 580 exII Even with the shields it seems to miss fire on that all important shot.

I know the controller is coming soon and looks very good. Ideally I would consider going to a 600rx system, but not sure I can justify and I lust for the Profoto, but unless they want to lend me a test setup or someone is feeling generous, it will remain a dream for the time being.

Is an excellent guide to compatibility. New controller is increasing backward compatibility with earlier flashes, as far back as 550ex.

No interference issues at all from the 2.4ghz system on any flash.

Very pleased with mine. Hated the flex system with a vengeance.

Brilliant, that gives me some bedtime reading. I like the idea of the flex system, but it is seemingly unreliable with the setup I have. Am Tempted by the 600 RT, but am weighing pros and cons.

Currently have PW Plus II (x3)

Flex, Mini and AC3

One 580EX2

One 430EX

Couple of Vivtar 285HV

Using Elinchrom Brx Flash heads too, so have built in sky port system so no need for manual triggers really.

If I sold that I could start a new system with the 600RT System, but unsure if that is best value in the longer term

In your shoes, I'd sell the PW's (all of them) and the Vivitar's (there's always a market) and buy 5 622's and a couple of YN 565s, that way you'd have a choice of a 4 flashgun ETTL setup, 3 flashguns which could be controlled manually from the camera position. Buy the 622 controller on release (I will be).

I sold my flex's due to DJ gear interfering with them.

How have you found them in use Phil compared to the PW? Is the controller on the way? I saw there was a Nikon version already released, but not Canon yet.
 
I liked the controls better on the PWs if I'm honest, scrolling through the menus on the camera isn't quick. That's why I can't wait for the transmitter.

For everything else, I prefer the YN's.

The case on the YN-622C-TX is the same as on the N-TX, but little else is. I have had an engineering sample to test for some weeks, but have not seen a user manual.

A significant problem has been revealed, and YN are right to not release the C-TX yet.

Version 4 of TOYUG has been prepared, but must wait until it can be compared with the official manual and a commercial unit.

Hint for the future: train yourself to change group FEC or Manual, without taking your eye from the viewfinder. It's sweet!

Ok, TOYUG? "The Other YN-622C User Guide". Link is in post 2, thanks, Kris.

The C-TX has a switch to enable my 550EXs to have both remote E-TTL, and remote Manual, so I expect that it will handle the 430EX also.
 
That's kinda what I was hoping to hear. Hope they get the glitch sorted soon.
 
- Initial learning curve for how quickly you can brain train to get to the correct menu in the camera? I can do it with my eyes closed now.
- No flashes with the system built in (not yet anyway), so always have to rely on a transceiver underneath each flash - more batteries, more connection problems perhaps (though never a problem for me). The Canon system is beautiful..
- Eternal wait for the controller :(
- Currently need EXII for best performance.
- Focus assist only works on centre focus point, and is often misaligned. The Canon flash focus assist covers all points, but the STE3 doesn't even have one at all!!!

Not much, off the top of my head.

Any ideas as to how far off release ?
 
Exactly one week after I say screw it and buy 4 600ex-rt.

I'll hurry up and buy them then.....

I am using Yongnuo 568EX II's and a 430EX original with the 622C triggers. The triggers will fire the 430EX, but you won't be able to control the power remotely.

Manual power control, no.

TTL control, yes. Including ratio mode, FEC etc.

The new, but delayed, dedicated transmitter improves control with older guns.

Interesting, thanks, I didn't know that. I don't use TTL with my 430EX so I had never thought about it, it's nearly always a background light.

The obvious problem being that a move of the subject might change the TTL output significantly. Just join the queue for the transmitter.

Already have joined the queue. Got them last night and had the obvious play. I like the use of in camera settings and it is quite intuitive (to me anyways). Still going to get a transmitter as soon as I can.

Thanks for the advice! Might order 2 more so that I can have the 430ex going too and have the all important spare.

yeah ..absolutely, I very rarely if ever use ttl.
