I was just reading up on some reviews on the yn622 for canon, and about the imminent release for the Nikon version. (Trying not to rush into the pw or odin just yet)
Surely the 622 on the canon is driven by the in camera menu. Which would assume the Nikon version will be very similar.
Which is all very well, but I notice from the pics that on canon you have 3 groups and master but on Nikon you only have 2 groups and a master.
So whilst patiently waiting for this great cheap bit of kit for Nikon release, it has one major flaw already for me, if not many.
I would think if they were managing to work around that issue that the whole group control would have to be taken away from the menu on the cam, which would make it a totally different product.
Very intrigued to see what it will offer!

Canon has only 3 groups. It's command stream talks to up to 3 groups and master, but when it comes to actual exposure, the Master flash, if there is one, is deemed to be in group A. So, three groups max; no master.

You are right, the Canon version is by design a communication interface between camera and remote flash, with some useful tweaks. There are other devices which create their own protocols and have a settings interface.

The YN-622N when on-camera can have a Master flash or an SU-800 on top, and the 622N will then use and implement the settings (and interface) of that device. As with the 622C, the facilities are based on the camera and master flash capabilities, good and bad.

The YN-622N does not need a Master device on-top to handle i-TTL and compensation.

My approach is "let's see how this device actually works, then determine whether it suits my photography".
