Yes
I've just bought a YN465 from eBay, but when it's arrive it says 'for Nikon' on the side of the box, but I have a Canon setup.

Are these universal, can I use it?

(I have messaged the seller)

Thanks for the quick reply FITP, ah what a shame because they delivered it really quickly as well. Will have to get them to sort it out next week.

Sorry to be a pain but this is the reply from the seller

Dear valued customer

Happy new year !

Sorry for the late reply due to the festival

Please don't worry. This flash can work both canon and nikon as as ad said:

Compatible With:

Canon 40D 50D 350D 400D 450D 500D 550D REBEL XS XSI XTI XT T1I T2I
IT IS NOT FIT 5D, 5D II ,7D,600D, 1000D,1100D,1Ds SERIES
NOT suitable for Nikon D3X, D3, D2X, D2 Series

I trust this is helpful for you

Is this right? I'm a bit confused now as I know FITP knows a lot about these flashes. Would it cause any damage giving it a try on camera?

No, it's completely incorrect. These flashes are not universal-fit, both the contacts on the foot and the internal wiring differ between versions. If you need official confirmation of this I'd suggest contacting YongNuo directly and forwarding their response to the seller.

Yeah agree with fitp, they are brand dependent as the hot shoe pins for TTL flashguns differ between Nikon and Canon.

Even a brief look at pictures is enough to confirm that.
I would send a link to the seller from the yongnuo website showing the proof that the 465 is not a universal flash.

Thanks for the help FITP and Stupar.

The seller is still certain that they are universal, so I've sent him a link to the website where it shows that there are 2 versions. I've also emailed Yonguno and am awaiting their reply. I've told the seller I want to return it or I am going to open a dispute.

FITP, I just wish you was still selling these as I would have come straight to you rather than going on fleabay.

Just an update:

The seller has finally agreed that it was a shipping error, and has agreed to replace it along with a 'free gift'. So although it's been a pain it'll be sorted soon.

Perfect!
Persistence pays off when you know you are right and they are wrong!

Update:

Well, it arrived at the end of last week. Was a bit long and drawn out, which was annoying to say I paid a little more to get it from a UK ebayer.

And the 'free gift' you ask??? Seeing as it cost me £3.25 to send it back to them I thought they might throw in a diffuser or something like that........

I got a USB SD card reader, the sort you get from Poundland. Will do me the world of good seeing as my camera (and they knew I had a 400D) takes CF cards.
