YN-460II problems with Cactus v4

Well when I go out shooting photos and I use my flashes I use a YN-460II and a YN-560 and the YN-560 never misses a beat but the YN-460 has a few problems it goes off by itself and just keeps going till I go over and turn it off, flashes once then won't recycle, it won't do anything. It works fine on my camera and then I go home and check it and it works perfect every time and it's annoying knowing that it just plays up when I really need it and I can not think of what it could be and just wanted to know if any if you can think of what it may be. Check that the 460 is sitting properly on the hotshoe, sounds as if it is moving about and causing phantom triggering, a carefully placed cardboard shim will fix it if that is the problem.
 
Thanks man I will do, would this also cause the non recycling? Also I forgot to mention it has always been like this since I got the v4's and it has never done it on any other triggers so it's leading me to believe it doesn't like these triggers but I read about other people using 3 and being fine.
 
I had no end of problems with my old Cactus V2s triggers, same sort of random firing problem and in the end wedging the flash in place with a bit of card was the only way to get them to work....
 
i'm using a 460II with cactus v4 and no problems at all, a Metz mecablitz though...different kettle of fish :/
 
Hi could you please show me how you made the little card shim please and if yours is fine antihero I'm wondering if it's just my flash
 
If the flash works without fault when it's on the camera and the fault only manifests itself when it's on the triggers then it's safe to say that the problem is with the triggers rather than with the flashgun. The culprit is usually not the electrics of the trigger but the small thin metal "spring" plate on the hotshoe, which can become weak or bent out of shape

Try putting the flashgun on the hotshoe of the receiver and see if you can rock it back and forward or from side to side. You may then be able to simply bend the spring plate slightly to allow it to hold the flash more securely. Failing that, simply cut some thin cardboard a few small pieces and wedge them as required between the foot of the flash and the hotshoe of the Cactus receiver (making sure you don't cover the centre pin) until the flash is stable.

If neither of these methods cure it then it could well be that there is a fault with the receiver, but as I said previously it's highly unlikely to be an issue with the flashgun itself.
 
Thanks for the reply I will have a go when I get home :) the other thing is I have 3 different receivers and it's been on all them but still does the same thing but I will try as it may just be how the flash and trigger are made they don't fit right
 
Right I just checked and I can twist it quite a bit could that be the problem?
 
Can you get ahold of another flash (of any make) to try, to see if the the same fault is occurring with that?

It could well be....if you are having the problem with several receivers then perhaps a couple of bits of gaffer tape on the foot of the flash to take up the slack might be easier than cardboard shims.

Well i have just had a play about and found that it was the flash and not the triggers that's the cause of the problems thanks for the help

How can it be the flash if it works on the camera hotshoe? If you Google these triggers the problem you're having seems to be pretty common and with many different flashguns.
 
Noo I took it off tried it and put it on my camera and then it was still playing up
