Yes
I have a 4 bay Qnap TS410 that must be about 6-7 years old - I've only ever had 2 drives in it, and use it to hold a copy of my music, photo's and documents. My Sonos system runs from it, but otherwise it is just a way of keeping a copy of all my data. It does all I need, and the only issue I have ever been aware of is that it can take a while to load up anything from it to the pc (not that I often want to..)
As I am in the process of replacing the HD's for some larger ones I have been having a look at it and other newer versions. One of the obvious differences is that the new ones (Qnap TS 251 for example) have 2gb of RAM, mine has only 256mb. They also do another model, the TS210 which is a lot cheaper, but only has the same RAM as my current one.
I'm not about to go and buy a new one, but what difference would I see if I did ?
Thanks for any replies and imparted wisdom !

With NAS drives the electronics and RAM combined with processor are generally what give it oomph so pay not much don't get much really.
Opting for a newer one though with the New drives you mention will give you another free NAS though.

I have a TS 412, probably of similar vintage and I doubt I use half of thr functionality of it....
Mine has 4x 2tb drives in it and stores my rminages and music.
I use drin have some ripped dvds on it as well and play them on my TV, but don't even do that any more.....
