Just wanted to say a quick hello.

My name's Karl and I live a just outside of Birmingham in a town called Sutton Coldfield, and judging by all the other new member threads on here I'm not the only one to get a shiny new DSLR for Christmas :)

I'm completely new to photography, and am trying to teach myself the ropes with lots of reading online guides and magazines and quite a bit of experimentation.

I've got a Nikon D3000 with the 18-55Vr lens, and have already added to that with a Manfrotto tripod.

So far I've managed to capture a handful of photo's that I'm happy with and have uploaded them to my Flickr account, which all being well should be linked in my signature, comments and criqitue welcome.

welcome.............

when i bought my D40 - the owners manual was rubbish....
have a look at "Nikon D3000 Digital Field Guide (Paperback)" at Amazon Books <£10
well worth it ..............

Welcome Karl

Hope you also have a large bank balance.... ;)

there's a bit of discussion ATM, but consensus seems to be to turn the VR to "OFF" when clamped on a tripod

I have a Manfrotto and the VR "hunts" because it doesn't sense any vibration to correct - strange but true - and images look soft

also have a look for a Nikon 35mm f1.8 AF-S - a class lens

G'day, Karlos!

I had a look at your images on Flickr and liked the one of Spitfire Island but I think I would have either cropped out the road signs at the bottom or angled the camera up a bit further when taking the shot.
Have fun with the new 'toy', Brian

Hi Wardie44, thanks for the feedback, totally agree with you, the Spitfire Island one was done before I had a tripod so I was pretty limited in terms of where I could rest the camera, plus its on a very busy road junction, I did try cropping out the signs and the B&Q in the background, but it also lost the light trails, which I kinda like.
I think it's definitely worth a re-visit at some stage as it's only down the road from me, possibly later at night when the traffic is a bit quieter, and hopefully now that I've got a tripod it will open up some better vantage points.

And Yardbent, thanks for the tip, I had just assumed that it couldn't hurt to leave the VR on all the time.

Hi Karl, and :welcome: to TP.
