Hi guys,
Taken a friends laptop away so I could get my photos off my memory card whilst I'm here and stupidly forgot my card reader, but I do have my USB for the camera. I figured this would be absolutely fine but Windows XP's built-in importer has other ideas!

I'm trying to access the RAW files on the camera but it's only giving me the JPEG's, I've tried 'Explore' and all sorts but they're still not showing and I really need to get them off so I can clear the card for tomorrow.

Has anyone else had this issue? I really can't figure out how to get them off, I hope I'm just being stupid and there's an easy solution!

Its been a while since I used XP for RAW (off an EOE300D back in the day).

If I remember I needed a TWAIN Driver for extracting the files from the camera.

Do you have internet connection where you are. May find help on brand support forums.

Good luck.

Same, never had these problems on Win7!

Got the laptop hooked up to the WiFi tethering on my phone, so no wonderful speeds but I do have 30 mins free WiFi from the hotel if need be for something big.

Might try looking for the TWAIN driver you speak of, thank you.

It's a Nikon D5100, if it changes anything!

Does the camera not detect as a drive that you can view from my computer?

Don't bother with the importer, just navigate to the files and copy them over.

Nope, when I go to 'My Computer' there is 'D5100' under 'Cameras and Scanners', when I go in there it literally just shows the JPEG's. I've tried 'Explore' and just about everything else I can think of and I get nowhere! :(

people still use xp?

meh I guess there are still people out there that use playstation 2's as well

It's an older laptop, it's better than nothing, I only have PC's at home as I never have a use for them.

Thanks for the productive comment though! ;) :P

Tried installing a Nikon codec but all it did was make 2 of each JPEG in the D5100 folder.

Getting frustrated now, got to head out for dinner, any ideas in the meantime will be greatly appreciated and I'll try and get back on it afterwards.

Also downloaded 'FastPictureViewer' since it handles RAW files, however it can't access the D5100 folder since the laptop sees it as a 'Camera or Scanner' therefore doesn't allow anything else access to it! GRRRR!

had exactly the same issue with an iphone the other day.

windows7=browse to the files
xp=scanner wizard

ARGH.

:bonk:

(no I couldn't find a way around it, would it just not be easier to find an argos and buy a cheapo card reader?)

Nowhere locally would be open and I won't have a chance to get anywhere before I go back for round 2 tomorrow morning sadly!

So frustrating!

Tesco wanted £25 for a card reader.

Needless to say it looks like I'll be sacking the RAW files off and making do with the JPEG's then!

Stupid Microsoft.

Hi Steve,
I had the NEF Codec installed initially, sadly all this did was convince the computer that the NEF file was in fact a JPEG and just labeled it x(1).jpg, it was very odd! I'd just have duplicates of each picture.

Strangely, a few moments ago, after about my tenth time of trying ViewNX (and swapping USB ports etc) it suddenly sprung into action. At last I finally have the NEF files! I had to uninstall the NEF codec in order to make sure the NEF files were definitely there and it certainly looks like they are! :D

Thank you very much for your help, never thought I'd get this resolved but there's a resolution for anyone stuck in future! :)

Great suff

If you go on say Amazon or ebay and type integral dual slot sd/sdhc/sdxc card reader you will see a pretty small sd micro sd reader in a small flash drive size.

I bought 5 of them for £2.79 each delivered. They are in each of my camer bags . They are well made and means I dont have to take my 72 format card reader with me.

(I have a couple of Integral CF readers in same bofy structure for the same reason).

Worth thinking of sticking one in each of your bags. Less stressy day!

Enjoy your trip.

Hi Steve,
The annoying thing is I have nearly 5 card readers sat at home! I never dealt with RAW files in my XP days so I had no idea I'd run into such an issue.

Believe me if it looks like I'll be dealing with XP again it'll be the first thing I remember to bring next time!

Thanks again for your help, really appreciate the time and effort :)

Glad you got it sorted, Bill. How did you solve it?

I use XP on an old machine which dates from before I had a digital camera and have not seen this problem with files on a card.

Dave

Hi Dave,
If you see post 13 I have put some info up there on what I was experiencing and what did/didn't work for me.

ViewNX solved it for me in the end, and I'll definitely be taking a card reader with me next time! :D

Don't bother with the importer, just navigate to the files and copy them over.

^^ This

I don't know why people go through the hassle of using these fancy pants importers when it's much easier to navigate to the folder and CTRL+C / CTRL+V.

If you can't see RAW files in the folder, they might be hidden (though they shouldn't be).

If you can't see them in some importer, it's because the importer was design for point/click numpties.

There was no alternative, XP detects it as that type of device and I had no option other than to use the built-in importer.

If I could've just selected them, believe me I would've done as that's what I always do, but I didn't have access to them. They weren't just 'hidden', the XP importer ONLY shows you jpeg or valid image files.

I think you may have something loaded at start up, Bill, that causes the PC to default to the importer. Alternatively perhaps the importer has been used in the past and an "Always use this software to import files" box has been checked by accident.

I use XP and whenever I attach any device it just shows up another drive.
