Hello all.
I’ve just taken delivery of an Xbox one S for my boys. I have zero experience of these machines and need an idiots guide to using it. I’ve ordered a couple of physical games for it, but they’ve not arrived yet. I’ve downloaded a couple using the months free games pass, but I’m concerned about the amount of games that want to go online. I’m not interested in this at all. I want a stand alone games console for the boys to use. Am I missing something obvious?
Any pointers or tutorials would be great.
Thanks
Nick

What do you mean about 'games that want to go online'? Most games have either a single player or a multiplayer (online) option. You don't have to play online and there is a subscription for it (Xbox Live), although I assume you have a month free of that also.

Unless you mean connecting the console to the internet which you would have had to do to download the games, most of them will need a connection to update as and when patches/updates/new content are released.
Consoles now are VERY different then the 90's where you just stuck a cartridge in and played a game. I'm trying to (re)embrace it myself at the moment.

The S doesnt have a disc drive (digital downloads only) so I hope you havent ordered physical media.

Some do, some don't. Both are available. :)

The one without is called 'All Digital'

Ah, I thought it was digital only, may need to look a bit closer when the deals come up, thanks.

No problem. I only know all this as I have been researching a lot recently. Haven't had a modern console aside from he Switch since the PS3 many years ago.

The best deal I have seen was a few weeks ago with the X and a game for £259.99, direct from Microsoft.

I was kind of in a similar situation when I got one for my son, but it seems to be heavily dependent on having a connection. I ended up just paying for the Ultimate Game Pass which I think costs me £10 per month. You get a large choice of free games and also includes the online multiplayer subscription side of things. When you factor in how much games cost it works out well. Alternatively, places like CEX and GAME are great for used titles.

Next up will be a headset and then Fortnite/Roblox will be the game of choice...always. Then prepare yourself for lifelong headaches as they yell non-stop over the mics with friends on their consoles.

I mean as an example I downloaded Minecraft for them and it seems to be saying unless I go into a public domain ”room” or whatevs it's called they can play it? Also trying to find a two player option is like finding the holy grail.

Yep definitely has a disc option

I bought mine on Amazon. Console and two controllers was £265. Quick delivery too, 3 days

Ah right. Hopefully someone more versed with Minecraft can help you. I have never fancied that and been out of the loop for many years as I say.

Tell me about it! I tried finding a good old split screen game for 2 player local on PC and no such thing seems to exist anymore, WTH! The good old days must be over.

Yep they've asked for Roblox, I've said no.... Let's see how long it lasts!

The one I got was the X which is a little better. Can’t find that deal anywhere now.

haha, it's a pretty basic looking game but it seems to have a huge amount of content as I think people can create their own worlds.

The whole privacy part took a while for me to get to grips with, then there was cross-platform with Fornite and a PC until I quickly realised I am now completely crap at online FPS.

One part I had issues with was the whole child account thing. It is good as you can control and monitor their usage etc, however, I think it can restrict games they can play and cross-platform. But I couldn't let him play on my account because my PayPal is activated on it for the monthly subscription, so he could go nuts on it with Fortnite skins.

I set him up with his own user account on the Xbox but there was still the payment problem and it's a pain to constantly have to log in my PayPal details for him and then cancel it because Microsoft automatically sets it up as a preferred payment rather than a one-time purchase. The solution I came up with was to setup a second PayPal account for me (I don't think children are allowed one) and it is active under his user login, however, there is no money in it. When he needs to pay for something (after earning it!) all I have to do is transfer from my online banking into this PayPal account using my phone. Takes about 20 seconds. :)

I really hate the way games have gone now with all the chargeable Downloadable Content (DLC) and in-game micro transactions. Fornite is a nightmare for this and it's crazy prices for useless things like a new set of clothing. It's not even like you are paying for a new map or units etc. But they've got the kids hooked big time. As for the whole DLC, it feels like games are now released at beta stage, but they still charge full price, and feel like they are missing a lot. Then DLC becomes available for cha-ching...

for game passes , live gold , or any of the paid for items on the xbox 1 we use CD keys to purchase vouchers rather than adding an account to the children's xbox
my youngest son managed to attach his phone account to his xbox 1 and gave us a £100 bill on his phone in the space of a couple of hours so that's something to look out for
