Yes
I've just had a chest X-Ray after having had a cough for 3 months. The guy said the results would be sent to my GP in 7 days, does this mean that my GP decides whether the X-Ray is showing anything wrong or not or will the X-Ray have been looked at by someone more qualified and just the results sent to my GP. I probably should have asked the radiographer but I didn't give it a thought untill I got home.

i wouldnt have thought that a GP would have the specialist skills required.

if theyre sending the GP the results I would expect that to mean the GP will receive a diagnosis (if any) from a radiographer/specialist.

would have thought they would have told you the result there and then. Like neil says the gets just gets the results. did you get the xray done via a consultant or did you just get a time to go get one done.

The radiographer will pass the X-Rays to a radiologist who will examine them and send your GP the results/diagnosis.

When I had an MRI in August '12, the radiographer spotted something amiss and a fortnight later I was allowed home. I was lucky in the fact that I was nuked (OK, magnetised!) early in the morning and the radiologist was around to give a fairly instant reading. Of course, I was Unlucky in the fact that the scan revealed a problem but at least it was spotted and dealt with rapidly. Hope your outcome is less dramatic than mine!

For the same reason I doubt the GP will make the diagnosis neither can a radiographer in both instances they should be seen by the radiologist it is they who will make any diagnosis/recommendation.

My GP just gave me a card and I went to the hospital for the X-Ray.

You and me both!

Used to be both, your Doc gets the results and the X-rays about a week or so after they are taken.

Have just been through the process myself (though on my shoulder), my GP sent me up with a card to refer, X-Ray was taken, they gave me a rough idea of what was wrong but said the results would be with GP in 7-10 days, in that time they where read by someone in the know and the results passed to the GP, hope all is OK with the results :)

I had an MRI done a couple of years ago and I found it really odd as I understand the physics of whats going on so kept thinking all the protons in my head where having their magnatisation flipped

I've had 4 so I think my poles are normalised now!!! My sense of direction is completely f***ed though.

I had my chest x rayed before xmas after I mentioned in passing to the Doc about a dry cough...... The radiologist took a look and then sent a decision to the Doc....Thankfully nothing ontoward... Good luck with your results

The radiographer just takes the x-ray. I have had loads and loads of chest x-rays (since I was 10) and have never had a radiographer tell me what's wrong, the x-ray always go to my consultant who the looks to see what, if anything, is wrong. As for your case about weather someone more specialized will look at them, well I don't know for sure. I think they always go to the Dr that requested the x-ray. But I'm sure if your GP isn't sure about what he/she sees they would refer you.

I hope there's nothing to worry about and you are ok.

The radiographer does the imaging.
The radiologist makes the diagnosis.

Having had a couple of xrays recently I can tell you that Yes they will be looked at by someone more experienced who knows what they are looking at.
First time I needed one I was given a letter to go to A&E for the xray to get an immediate result in case treatment was needed, last week I week \i went
direct to the hospital and as a result seems I am having an op for a shattered elbow on friday :(
Previously when a doctor has sent me, like you, I have had to wait a week or so for results some things need to be looked at by a specialists
so yes it is normal
Hope everything is ok (y)

The radiologist makes the diagnosis.
Not necessarily. The diagnosis comes from a combination of history, and appropriate examination and investigations.

In the OP's case, the new guidelines recommend an X-ray for anyone who has a persistent cough for more than six weeks. The radiographer will take the x-ray. Given that the request is external (and GP won't have access to the PACS system) the radiologist will interpret the x-ray to ascertain whether is a cancer, chronic lung changes, infection etc or whether it's normal. Radiologist dictates report, secretary types it up, it gets posted out and sent to the GP. Some places have electronic reporting systems so the results are sent via the computer rather than letter. GP will then take into consideration the x-ray along with the rest of the history and ascertain what (if anything) is causing the cough.

In most trusts, if the x-ray has been requested internally eg junior doctor, the x-ray is frequently not reported and it's up to the clinician to interpret the x-ray, which is a lot easier given that they will be able to see the actual x-ray on the computer system.

Well, yes, but I was referring to the confusion over radiographer/radiologist in the previous posts where people seemed to be talking at crossed purposes.
Perhaps it would be more accurate to say the radiologist interprets the image which may consitute a diagnosis in itself; but a final diagnosis may also come from many sources, including the radiologist's report.

I had a lingering cough a couple of years ago and went for an x-ray. I was told it would take a week or so for the result to be sent to my GP, which seems to be the norm, but I was also told that if anything serious is found I would be informed immediately (so would my GP) by the hospital direct. Usually if you don't hear anything until your GP gets the result it's because it's clear. Fingers crossed that you will have the same outcome Neil. I'd had two bouts of mild pneumonia a couple of years previously so the doctors wanted to be thorough in my case.

In our area it is all done on line. Even the GP can see the x ray on his screen, and read the report.

had this last year ,waiting the week for the results is terrifying ,trying to plan ahead in your mind in case of bad news etc ,luckily mine came back all clear which surprised me after a lifetime of smoking till 4 years ago .hopefully the OP will have his results back by now or shortly ,and i hope its all clear for you

I don't find out until Thursday. As it's been a week since I had the x-Ray done I'm thinking I would have heard by now if it was bad news. The cough is as bad now as it was at Christmas, just no improvement at all. My guess is it's bronchitis as I can fill my lungs but it stings when I inhale and my airways are clogged however the cough is dry. The slightest exertion be it only talking or laughing sets of a coughing fit. I believe bronchitis does't show up on x-rays but pneumonia does.

fingers crossed ,you have my full sympathy .if its the bronchitis bug i had it just won't go away either
