Been rocking a PNY 512GB external SSD for a while now for the lad's Xbox One S. We put the big games on it for faster loading speeds which we definitely notice over the slower internal one, where the smaller games are installed.

Space is running out so I was going to add another drive and was thinking about a portable NVMe USB 3.2 drive and move the most intensive games to it, but do you think I'll notice much of a difference over USB3 SSD? Will the Xbox even be able to take advantage of the extra speed as I think it only has USB 3.0 ports?

Only go for NVMe if you need the smaller form factor otherwise go for a standard SSD-based drive. You won't get any benefit from USB 3.2 if it's plugged into a USB 3.0 port so go for the cheaper option or, better, spend the same amount and go larger.

I've got a Xbox series X and I use a green 2TB Seagate memory card that I have had since the launch of the Xbox one. I don't notice any difference in load times and my HD has got to be 5/6/7 plus years old.

My son has an Xbox Series X in his room and is after some new memory. He is looking at the 4tb one from Currys (white Xbox one).

I'm not a technical guy but I do wonder if these have any benefit over standard external HD drives.

I have a Series X. I've plugged this drive into it and it works perfectly.


You can also buy bigger versions.

It's not as fast as the Series X drive so it will only allow certain games to be played from it However, I think it would be just as fast on an Xbox One as an NVME As @Snapsh0t says, they are only USB 3.0 so a quick SSD will be as fast as NVME.

The only way to get full compatibility with a Series X is the (very expensive) Seagate expansion card. Other drives will work for older games and for storage but not for playing newer games from as they aren't fast enough. There's a good article on this here

Interesting, thanks for that in will send it to my son.

I've got loads of games on my external HD and they work fine. That being said, I haven't looked at which are new / optimised. If I get an hour later on I might have a play with it (the Xbox that is) and report back.
 
According to MS, it's better to pay £220 for the official 1 TB expansion for their consoles! You what? Surely it's more economic to pay around a third of the price for a 4 TB external on Amazon? I have 3 of them and would willingly buy at least 1 more next year if Dad didn't go on a 20 minute rant about me being on benefits every time I spend more than a fiver on anything.

Better != more economic :) Especially if you are selling.

Bigger drive is cheaper, official drive supports all games.
