Hello,

Every time I take a batch of photos I back them up onto a USB drive but this time I have problem. The PC or USB drive will not let me copy my new files from my PC to it. This is a picture of the contents of the USB drive. As can be seen they appear to be locked

This shows the permissions which are read only, I try changing this but it re defaults back to the same.

General information showing the drive is not full.

Any ideas ?

It shows read and write access for the owner. Are you signed in as the owner? Have you tried a different memory stick? Are the photos saved as read only?

Your USB drive is knackered. Was it cheap or expensive. has it been dropped or damaged. When I worked in IT Support the plug bit often came away from the drive bit.

Thanks for the info, The stick ( Scandisk) is about a month old and was brought from PC world as I was passing I'll get it back to them. It has been stored in a small plastic box away from anything else and at least appears in good condition. As far as I am aware it hasn't suffered any bangs or knocks.

The memory stick doesn't have a write protection switch on it somewhere, does it?

That's what I first thought but unfortunately there is no switch !

How are you mounting it?

As it's a linux system, what does your fstab and mtab look like? (if that doesn't make sense ignore it for now... )

I'm letting it mount automatically , I've tried unmounting and remounting but I get the same every time. It had worked before without problems but as I had some holiday photos I thought i would back them up and came across this . As my other memory sticks are working fine I'm guessing the problem is with the stick.

USB pen drives are notoriously unreliable they are designed for transferring files from one computer to another not for storage.

There are a couple of post about the fragility of USB sticks, and I've found if you bought a reputable brand they are far more resilient than many believe.

Having worked at an industrial laundry I have acquired a few that have been left in pockets, sent through the dry cleaning machine and come out with distorted outer plastic shells but the drive themselves work absolutely fine.

The ones that went through the wet wash ( in water as opposed to Perc) had a worse survival rate, but some are fine.( I think it's the ones put straight into the dryer that are OK, left to sit wet and rust inside always going to kill them)

The obviously dirt cheap knockoff from eBay are the dives that failed our cleaners most often.
