Would you still recommend a D300?

Hi all.
I'm looking at getting back into photography after a bit of a break and was after a nikon. Looking on the 2nd hand sites and you can pick up a D300 at a fairly good price as looking to do this on a small budget. Will mostly be using the camera for pics of off road radio control cars for our club. My thinking is more saved on the body to spend on a nice 70-300 or maybe a sigma 70-200.

I used a D300s for a couple of weeks recently when my D850 was in for repair, I found it a very creditable body for street and wildlife photography.

Although mine was a D300s I'm sure the D300 wouldn't be much different for still photography. :)

Cheers for the reply. How do they cope with tracking auto focus as i'm going to be taking pics of the cars going round our track?

There are better cameras with advanced AF but then you have to pay the extra, personally I didn't have any problems with people and birds but did no car racing.
 
The only other option i see in the price range i was looking at was a D7000.
 
Good comparison here, seems to promote the D7000 over the D300s but note points 9 & 12 which may be important to your requirements.
 
I used the 300s for a couple of years and it is a pro body unlike the D7000. I had no issues with tracking for sports (cycling/running). Noise handling is superior on the D7000 but the 300 feels like a 'proper' camera and my only comment with it now would be noise control.

Most of the tracks are outdoors so think noise shouldn't be a issue.
