Thats fine for indoor (unless it folds) You would be better of with something like THIS then it will fit in your bag/backpack and you can use it anywhere!.

That will work fine, as far as it goes. To soften shadows you really need a big diffuser, like a shoot-through brolly or something similarly large. That diffuser will make a useful difference if used close (when size, relative to the subject, is largest) but over five or six feet away it will be hardly noticeable.

The Stofen type diffusers (and other similar techniques) are usually more effective with hot-shoe guns as they use the ceiling and walls as reflector/diffusers which of course means the light source becomes effectively very large indeed.

In this respect, if you use the hi-light panel in your 580 gun, you will get a very similar effect to a Stofen. It actually works extremely well in the right environment, eg average white ceiling to bounce off. Don't dismiss it because it looks like nothing much, try it. You might be amazed :)
