I so wanted to shoot some B & W at a wedding yesterday (I was just a guest) but couldn't work out how to do so from my camera manual. I understand now, but that's too late innit - or is it?

Would anyone be so kind as to give this shot a monochrome makeover for me, please?

Sorry, tried to edit and it went horribly wrong (posted the wrong picture on the first attempt hence the Pixel Police siren has now gone missing). Can someone tell me how to resize please? I use Photobucket.

The couple in shot love it as it is (posted it in People and Portraits, received positive feedback so dared e-mail it to them and they're delighted that I did :) ).

I think the romance and atmosphere might be better captured in either sepia or B + W. I'd hate to lose those fabulously vibrant hair colours though. Would it be possible to have everything bar the hair in black and white?

Here you go Alison...

What fabulous takes, each and every one of them - thank you! :D I'm really, really happy with those.

Would anyone mind if I e-mailed these to the couple in shot? I know they'd be just as thrilled as I am.

Feel free Alison it's your image, we just helped a little. Wayne

Yay, that's so generous of you all and much appreciated!

I really am over the moon with these and know that the Lovebirds will be too. I'll obviously credit the work to you and if you'd like me to do that by "real name" including surname please PM me.

Thank you again for taking the trouble to make this shot over to such incredible effect and for your generosity in sharing :)

I don't normally (well, never) do B&W conversions but I thought I'd have a shot at this. I had to shrink it a little to host it but here goes....

Another great take on that photo and I really like the result

Just out of interest, what was it that inspired you to convert it to B + W if you're customarily (by your own admission) averse? Genuine question as I really am curious. Is it something specific about that particular snap and, if so, what?

In my efforts to become a better photographer I strive to capture the subject/scene before me accurately and to present what was there in a natural fashion, without excessive PP. I'm happy to use DPP or Lightroom to add minor enhancements or to correct for my errors or limitations of the equipment or light, but I do not like fakery. I try to avoid using Photoshop at all costs, although Smart Sharpen is a bit nifty.

I'm not an artistic person by nature, but very scientific and clinical. The idea of removing the colour from a scene which plainly is colourful in nature is a bit alien to my thinking. I mean - why would you want to do that (rhetorical)? That said, I appreciate that some B&W photography has a certain charm to it and I try to remain as open minded as I can. I am interested in wedding photography and fully accept the need/desire for B&W images in that genre. Thus, when presented with the "excuse" to give it a go I thought I'd just try, out of curiosity. After all, anyone can press the "convert to greyscale" button, but I did wonder whether I could actually add a little more value to the photograph. Maybe I was successful, maybe not, but at least I tried :)

Love playing with others shots so here is my go ;)

I don't use Photobucket, but you have to be careful with some of these hosting sites as they don't always allow you to link to an image size fitting the limits of various forums.

As for saving images.

First of all resize the image to 800 pixels on the longest side. You'll need to re-sharpen at this stage.

Go to 'Save As' and specify jpeg as the file format, which brings up a box where you can specify the amount of compression before you actually save it.

Adjust the compression slider till the physical size of the image is 200kb or just under.

Save the image.

I prefer to upload to hosting sites at that exact size, as I know what I'm getting when I link to it.

Kissy loved-ups really like your take on this too Alby :) Are you ok about me sending them your version?

Thanks for the resizing advice CT: fully mastered now in CS3 which is on my computer at work. Gimp installed here at home and I can't seem to do the same with that software - any clues?

No probs it's not my image I just played as requested ;)
