I'm trying to reorganise my study area of the spare bedroom. It currently houses my amateur radio stuff, my iMac, 2 other screens, a MacBook Pro and by little Raspberry Pi (part of my radio set up). We've been searching for a new desk, shelving & draws, but other than Ikea, we're struggling to find somewhere with stock to look at.

One desk in Ikea seems to fit the bill (Alex, in dusky turquoise) but the matching draws are out of stock. We visited 3 other furniture shops in Bristol today, and nobody had anything on display. You world think with all the home working these days, desks would be easy to find. We liked the desk at Ikea as we have fairly limited space, it would fit in and it has a cable management system. It's doing my head in, and it doesn't help when discussing it with Mrs J when she gets width & depth mixed up :headbang:

I used these people, buying a curved L-desk and pedestal (drawer) unit. I put cable tray under the desk behind the vanity board as I built it. Not the cheapest, but looks like it does when I bought it, and thats 5 years ago (and it fitted the space I have available well).

I've got this https://www.nationalofficefurniture...-cantilever-desk-and-800mm-desk-high-pedestal

I then put 3 Ikea (in matching grey) Eket units above the desk along teh wall, two with doors on, one open, for storage.

Two of these https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/eket-cabinet-w-2-doors-and-1-shelf-dark-grey-20344921/#content

and one of these https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/eket-wall-mounted-shelving-unit-w-4-comp-dark-grey-s19285833/#content

Can the Swedes give you any idea as to when the drawers might be back in stock? If so, could they be retrofitted (if they're part of the desk)? THIS SET doesn't come up with an "Out Of Stock" message.

I'm also in Bristol and got my most recent desk from Amazon. No need to lug it home from a shop. Wouldn't even know where to suggest you go to be honest. There used to be a 2nd hand office furniture shop near the railway arches on Cheltenham road (got my filing cabinet from there) but that was probably two decades back so I imagine it's long gone.

It might be worth finding a local carpenter to make you a bespoke desk structure which you can add some IKEA drawer stacks to ?

We're just doing the bedroom out - well, the main stuff is pretty much there now - but one thing I want to do is a new PC desk. I have a cupboard to the left (PC tower) couple of drawers to the right & the sliding shelf in the middle. But it's that melamine stuff & I hate it! I was going to pick up a set of real wood drawers & something for the tower to go it (maybe make a metal/industrial thing) & do everything in black & then make a nice natural wooden table top for it.

I don't like Ikea as an actual shop, but they do some good quality stuff really for the money. How about drawers or whatever & get a separate top made to your spec/size or something?

The idea of the drwas & a tabletop goes out of the window because the "desk" has built in cable management, and I want to hide all the cables. The Mrs has decided she's OK with the "white stained oak" colour, which I'm happy with, so we may go down that route. We looked at the "Freddie" desk, but I'd struggle to get a printer under it, and it's too deep.

I'm still surprised at the lack of desks in shops though...

I bought a range of stuff for my combined radio shack/editing space/work desk (5 laptops, 1 Mac mini, 1 iMac, 4 transceivers, 2 big screens) from an online store OfficeBoffins. Good quality flatpack stuff, although I had to pay extra for delivery to Northern Ireland. Not cheap, but a nice setup of L shaped desk, straight desk to continue it, 2 under desk pedestals, 1 cupboard same height as desks. I've since added a high bookcase and a 4 drawer filing cabinet (this for all my camera gear). Recommended if you have the budget.

In my computer room, we have four computer desks. This is more than we actually need now but was necessary before the children left home. I do not recall it being at all difficult to find desks but that was some time ago. With so many home/offices, they must be readily available.

I fastened a length of Kitchen work top to the wall with outer supports of breakfast bar legs, plenty of room for all the ham radio gear.

I think Ikea killed everybody else.

In a bricks and mortar furniture store, a desk takes a similar amount of space to a dining table. An adequate desk from Ikea with a drawer costs 45 quid. They can't afford the space for everyone to go "it's 1/10 the price at Ikea".

And yes, Ikea sell dining tables too - but many people care more about the looks of items in the "show" rooms than their "work" rooms.

Buy online ;( Even better, find a local firm that realises it no linger needs offices and get one of theirs probably for free.

I did this recently with some wardrobes - bought a Pax kit with all their fancy storage and got a carpenter to build it in. It looks amazing. But it wasn't a cheap option.

I fastened a 2m extra deep kitchen worktop to a standing desk frame. It's amazing and holds some big monitors and 3 computers :)

But i'm using the spare bedroom (the guest room) so it has to look good, that's partly the reason I'm remodeling it. I think we have now settled on the "Alex" range from Ikea, as they have matching shelves etc. The Alex desk is 1320mm wide, and with a pedistall the workspace will be over 1600mm x 58mm. Then a couple of matching shelves (Lack) should finish it off nicely. With a few other bits & bobs it will cost less than £400, and to think we were seriously considering a "garden room" at around £10k all in....

Have you got any office furniture outlets in your area that specialise in reselling liquidated stock or ex office. We have one locally and if you willing to consider second hand, you can usually latch on to a better quality item for less cash..

There were two fairly locally apparently, but neither of them are operating any more.
