Reading through the posts I notice the wealth of info on radio triggers. I must say the camera makers versions are very expensive, compred to the ebay ones. Are they really that useful ?

That's because the Ebay ones are, on the whole, junk. You pays your money.....
they work... but if they NEED to work, you NEED to get better than the ebay triggers.

I did an outdoor shoot this afternoon with a woman & her baby, started off with Cactus v4's - half the time they didn't fire and I couldn't get a sync any faster than 1/200, switched to a set of Yongnuo CTR-301P's (eBay jobbies) and these were just as bad. Frustrating as hell but I don't have the money for Pocket Wizards and my uncle is still on with making me some which will hopefully be more reliable than the rubbish I was using today!

Can these be made at home? I thought they were far to complex. Great if they can be made by you and me.

there's a thread around here somewhere about designing and building them, his uncle is a electronic engineer and so are a few other interested parties

I have the Nikon CLS system and use it for close in lighting stuff but bright sunlight can seriously hamper their functionality, I also had a cheap ebay wireless remote for firing a second camera which I found out to my cost has a very limited range and is a heap of junk if you want to use it at more than 10m. For those reasons I now have PW's, I will still use the CLS for closer stuff but for anything else the PW's will come out of the bag.

In my experiance, if you skimp and try to take the short-way around, you tend to loose out in the long run.

Read both lines together and don't think about photography ;)

I'd agree with the general feeling here...

Had cheap ebay triggers fail on me twice recently, fortunately was using them more for convenience than necessity and just plugged a sync lead in instead.

Won't be buying anymore that aren't skyports of pocket wizards
