Worth repairing or not?

Hi all, my 17-85 lens has been showing an Err01 Communication problem....... Is it worth a repair? Any ideas on costs or what recommendations to replace it with?

Classic error with this lens is a fractured ribbon cable......about £5 DIY or a bit more at a tame repairer.

Miles Whitehead is a name I've heard bandied around a few times for good value camera and lens repairs. I'm sure a forum search would find a link. Please note that I have no personal experience with his service, just remember the name.
