comon now is it worth me spending the extra on the canon 24-70L or go for the Sigma? is there THAT much difference to warrant the cost?

looking for a kit lens for my soon to arrive 40D
 
If you get a good copy of the Sigma? No. Unless you need full on weather sealing then personally they are pretty neck and neck on image quality.

However, try before you buy if you can, the Sigmas are fairly variable and range from superb quality to sometimes pretty soft.

I never bother with taking my camera, it's not until you get home and have a look at 100% images that you can tell if it's good or bad.





*Just bought a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 , £400 less than the Canon and it's got a GOLD ring :clap:
 
Try both, I love my sigma 24-70, damn excellent lens IMO.
 
The canon will be the better lens. The question is always whether that extra quality is worth the extra money it will cost you to get it. That difference in quality is certainly NOT proportional to the difference in cost.

You know, I reckon that there are far too many folks these days that are more interested in their rings than enjoying making images. ;)

That's a fact:) Got a gold ring too....

Me, I'm turning into a Sigma EX lens snob... 10-20mm, 28-70mm and 100-300mm. My next one will be the 150mm Macro;)
 
another one in the mix is the 18-50 for a kit lens, damn i hate this lark!

Nowadays the problem with sigmas QC isn't as much as it used to be.
You're pretty likely to get a good copy.
And I prefer the results from the Sigma to the Canon.
They're more contrasty.

The canon is a lot heavier, and the autofocusing is a bit quicker, but its never usually a problem.
I'd say, go for the Sigma unless burning cash is a past-time you enjoy.
 
this is what im thinking. if i do get a "bad" copy (not looking for a problem, the less hassle the better) buy it in a shop or internet merchant?
 
I'd say shop, simply because you can pop in and say "hey, it sucks, replacement please".
Internet, you have the issue of posting it, finding out who pays for the postage, waiting for a new one, etc etc.

To find out straight away if its naff, shoot a brick wall at a variety of focal lengths and apertures. Keep the camera still on a tripod.

I had the choice of £220 from HK or £269 over the counter at the local shop. I decided that a 3 year UK warranty and being able to smack the shop round the head with the lens was worth £49 :D
 
I think one advantage of the Canon will be the speed of the auto focus. So if that's important to you, you should probably save up for the Canon thinks me.
 
think its really decision made with the Sigma 24-70! if its pap ill give it back to Jessops (seem the cheapest local @ £267)

its 267 at Jessops which is cheapest i seen fyi

I bought it over the counter at DigitalDepot (5 miles from me) after haggling or you can get it for £258 in postage from www.cameras2u.com .

But as Bo2007 said you can get it from Jessops for £267 if you have one local.
