Hi,

I was given my works d40 to fix today as they said it wouldn't take pictures.

In autofocus it wouldn't take photo's but in manual it would, in autofocus it wouldn't focus so there's the reason it won't take a photo right?

When you have press the shutter in autofocus you hear a grinding wirring sort of noise with no movement of the lens or focusing so im feeling its been dropped on the lens .....? also in manual focus i guess you focus it like you would with the canon ef-s 18-55mm is lens like on my 450d?

Looking forward to confirmation on this problem, need anymore info on this issue please let me know.

Thanks

Hank

To be honest, if it's a kit lens, it's probably not viable to repair. The cost of the time alone is probably more than it's worth, let alone the parts on top of that. The most humane thing to do would convince them to sell it and buy a canon! But failing that, I'm sure you could pick up a kit lens from here reasonably cheaply if you work wants to refund you afterwards?

Kit lens is dirt cheap anyway, don't think they have any resale value. Rather the lens than the body.

Does sound as if the gears could be stripped in the lens motor, as the auto-focus is powered from there and not the body (as I'm sure you are aware).

I've watched a couple of the standard 18-55mm (non-VR) Nikon Kit lenses sell on eBay recently, for between 55 and 65GBP. Your old, broken lens isn't likely to have much value at all, if it's broken, I'm sorry to say :(.
