Anybody freelance for their local paper in UK. Considering whether approaching local paper covering sports.
Any input appreciated.

The two papers we get here both have staff photographers who cover some of the larger games, etc. but anything else they expect the teams to submit photos and a report if they want it published. Basically they don't have the staff to cover everything nor the budget to pay for it. On average they will, if pushed, only pay a few quid for a shot.

I gave submitting stuff a while back when one of my shots was used but credited to their photographer. When I asked for payment I was told they don't pay for shots, I said I don't pay for adverts but could I have one anyway? They then agreed to pay £15 for the shot but I never bothered sending the invoice.

Class answer, I salute you :)

The going rate is about £35 per pic but the quaint term "User Generated Content" is slowly putting a death grip on freelance images.

I tried it back in the day. They were happy to publish words and pictures whenever I sent them in and had the space, but extracting payment from them was a little more difficult. Sticking "contributed" on them seemed to be the way to credit them too.

Fair enough I only ever communicated by email with them, but I doubt they had a full time vacancy for a motorsport photographer/journo... to be honest I just saw it as a job on the side to get a bit more cash and exposure. In the end it wasn't worth my time, I was doing bigger jobs for bigger people with more exposure anyway.

I freelance for my local paper.. Papers have there own standard rates.. Thats what they offered me originally.. My paper is 6 days a week.. its enough to make me take the step into self employed.. them and other photography revenue streams :)

There is also a local paper that is published once a week.. you can imagine how small that is... They dont pay so much.. they use stock or swap sports pics with other local papers... if they cant manage like that then they pay 15 per pic..

Paper swapping ...for example Exeter v Accrington last week. ... local exeter paper will send local accrington paper pics so long as they do same in the return game... this saves both local papers a lot of money on up to date match action... the downside for the papers is that you get defending pics of your own team rather than attacking:)
