Anyone used Wordpress to build their web site?

I'm not too keen on where I am at present with mine and someone said Wordpress was a good way to go.

Is it good and, more importantly, easy to create a site with a gallery page and several other pages?

Weddings by Ryan is all word press. So yes it is very posible to use as a website.

I have a single page myself for advertising car photography and I also have one in the name of my main website. Not sure about the galery page as my images are linked from Photobucket...

Pretty easy. Wordpress has the concepts of pages and posts. Pages are for static events - eg the about you page, details of your products and services and posts are for the blogging style things - eg a posting for each shoot which could include gallery links.

Regular posts will give good search engine rankings.

Thanks guys. Sorry I posted this thread in here.

I was distracted when I was writing it and put it in the wrong forum!

I use Wordpress and there are plenty of free or low cost themes to get the look you want. Depending on whether you want to sell photos or not NextGen Gallery, a free plugin, makes it very easy to include galleries in your site.

Take a look at my site to see what you can do with Wordpress if you know how. It's very capable and one of the most popular CMS systems out there.

The thing about Wordpress is that it can be as complex or as straight forward as you like. Those who get the most out of it tend to be those that are willing to put a bit of time and effort into creating their own template designs and designing a site structure prior to installing it. You can of course download free templates and gallery plugins for it but the magic of Wordpress is it's sheer open-ended-ness in terms of customisability.

My website uses Wordpress, the amount of themes and plugins made it a no-brainer for me (which is handy :-p).. everything is so easy to set up and it's easy to keep up to date :) Link in my sig!

ive spent all day playing with wordpress to create a website, its fairly basic and lacking content and the logo is rubbish but its getting towards my liking.

I started with a theme and altered colours and sizes etc in the css then tweaked a bit of the rest of the code to my liking. i have very little knowledge of webspace coding so it was all very trial and error!

I used lightbox plus for the galleries which was easy enough to integrate.

all for free :)

I also use Wordpress with Nextgen gallery.

It's an easy way to get started. Install Wordpress, choose a theme, put in some content.

SEO is built in. My take was to turn off most of the actual 'blogging' functionality. Give it more of a website rather than 'blog' feel.

mine both use wordpress as well. Same as Matty NEXTGEN and a few other plug ins as well and its worth going for a custom theme as well

WordPress is superb and as already pointed out can be a simple or complex as your requirements dictate. There are some excellent themes and you can fairly easily change the look and feel without too much effort, even if you don't know any code.

Have a look here & here for 2 photographic style theme but there are hundreds out there!

Thanks guys I really appreciate all the responses.

Looks like this is the route I need to go down!

Thanks again

If you wanted to just test the waters and try the basics you could use the free wordpress.com version. It has limited capabilities compared to the .org install but will give you a glimpse of how it works. Then you can post a few things on there that point to your real wordpress site for some cheap inbound links ;)

My blog is Wordpress but the theme has various page layouts including one that is a full width page so you could easily customise it in to a full on website. There are a lot of themes and plugins out there that could easily let you make an entire website.
