Yes
I've heard it all now. It involves The York Dungeon where visitors can sit in a mock 18th century carriage, in the dark and,I think, have 'Dick Turpin' relate some of his horror stories, no doubt in the parlance of the day. He was hung in York in 1739. Obviously, not for the faint-hearted. If anyone knows about this carriage ride maybe you could expand on that if there's more to it. It seems that 'some' parents have complained about Mr Turpin's first name. It is, infact,Richard but has been Dick down the ages. Fortunately, the management at The York Dungeons are standing firm and Dick it will remain. Give in to 'Dick' Turpin and who knows where it will go.

Can anyone add to any to these.

Moby Richard....Richard Whittington..He thinks he's a 'Clever Richard'.. Tom,Richard and Harry. Anyone with a heart problem would have to refer to it as a Richardy heart. Referring to a stupid person it would be a Richardhead.

It's probably not wokeness (no racial or gender issues) but lack of education and experience.

I am reminded of the phrase 'point Percy at the porcelain' and wonder if one of Thomases friends is about to get the chop. ;)

Perhaps people who aren't aware that Dick is short for Richard could attend a cultural awareness course or perhaps be quietly and politely informed that life is not always a Richard Emery sketch.

Most of it bar the stupidity is down to the simple fact children for the last 40+ years have not been taught British history and its a fair bet most of them have never read a book either .

One of my school class ended up with the nickname "tricky Dickie"
Apparently so non PC nowadays!

IIRC, Dick used to fall foul of the norty words filter on this very forum.

Not the case. National curriculum in 80’s and 90’s was based around Norman conquest, Tudor and Stuart’s, The plague and fire of London, Cromwell, industrial revolution, world war 1 and 2.
Dick Turpin isn’t exactly of historic importance so wouldn’t feature on any curiculum.

I think it's more likely a story manufactured by The York Dungeons to get some social media traction. I'd certainly never have heard of their new "attraction" without this "controversy".

This, and I'm not sure what it has to do with wokeness either even if it was true.

Sounds like either Muslim or Christian fundamentalists, you know the original woke brigade!

I read about this in The Times where the suggestion was that there'd been an excess of sniggering/tittering children/sub-teen persons. Mind you The Times is fairly predictable in its reaction to events like this.
Was it a true story or was someone guilty of dicking about? I gave my token harrumph the first time I read the story.

No report gives any indication who, exactly, the parents were or how many. It does seem strange that suddenly some parents complain. As pretty well the whole country is laughing at this..including high profile people, then the parents must be in the same group. Surely, it can't be that one set of parents complain on Monday, another, unbeknown to each other,on Tuesday. Maybe you're right and two or three families from a wacky religious order turned up. I don't suppose we'll ever get to know. Usually,Christian fundamentalist are only offended by references to Jesus that they consider irreligious. Muslims wouldn't be familiar with Mr Turpin so wouldn't have an issue.

By the way ..I'm sitting in my study on the computer and the sweat is dripping off me...It got to 34C under the patio brolley at 4.00pm.

I need a drink of water :)

Oh sorry John I must of imagined the National Viewers and Listeners Association!

Now called Media Watch,I see.

Maybe Jonathan Ryan is right. A cooked up story to draw attention to the venue.Sounds most likely when you think about it because it sounds implausible. The equivalent of "If a deal sounds too good to be true, then it probably is"

Someone I know works as a contractor for schools (in Scotland). He had to install a “gender neutral” WC in one school

Scotland is "woke central". I think it goes against building regulations for schools if they are installing gender neutral loos. There are very good reasons for having certain facilities segregated by sex - safety, privacy, basic morality.

They'd have a heart attack over King Dick Ring Podgers...

That brought back memories of my dockyard apprenticeship, it was a very handy tool to have in a toolbox if lining up the feet of a large electric motor with the bedplate. Incidentally the King Dick brand was of very high quality and almost indestructible. One of the Lecky's who did a lot of the heavier work had a ring flogging spanner which was at least twenty years old and showed very little sign of wear.

Indeed. I had one of their ring podgers that got left behind on a site many years ago. Gave it to someone who would use the podger as well as the spanner bit.

How does basic morality come into it in the slightest? Gender neutral toilets don't have urinals generally, just individual cubicles so there's absolutely no privacy implications either.

I've worked in offices that have only had gender neutral toilets, and god knows how some people manage to deal with toilets on trains or planes.

I wonder what they will make about this

I do have some King Dick spanners but generally prefer Britool (UK made from the 60s and 70s), so it's mostly that but there is also some Gedore in the socket collection. It's all old stuff as I need Whitworth sizes, which I have covered from 1/8 to 1". Probably on the small size-range for a dockyard work, but I don't work on ships. I wonder if 'the woke' realise there is such a thing as tool porn? ;)

There are many women and girls who don't like them, I know from other forums, particularly sports ones.

Not liking something and it being immoral are quite different things.

OK, I think it's time I opened up and spoke honestly here... for many years now, I have 'identified' as a multi-millionaire. I have come to realise that me not being a multi-millionaire is giving me some mental health issues, so I'm thinking about launching a crowd funding project so I can achieve my ambition and my dream can be fulfilled.

So how are each of you fixed for a donation of around £1000 to start things off? I'd be ever so grateful. ;)

Ah! the joys of Chrome Vanadium 'silverware' :D

I have some King Dick tools in my toolbox still, also possibly Snail Brand, they haven’t seen daylight in some years, although a Porsche in the BTCC support series is sponsored by the King Dick brand.

Just as a point of information, I don't know what the differences are, but those references refer to English legislation, both the Schools Premises Regulations and the Building Regulations are different in Scotland.

I am aware of differences in the building regs, and the Schools premises regs in Scotland hasn't been updated since 1967. Your fact sheet indicates the Schools Premises Regs in England were updated in 2012.

While looking up these regulations I came across the legal debate over whether the regs actually "require" segregated facilities, The requirement is for half the "sanitary accommodation " to be made available for boys, without specifying the boys half is physically segregated.

Given they have been segregated in the past, there is a natural assumption that the boys half should be segregated, but the regs don't actually say that. It's also slightly oddly written in terms of it only applying when a school isn't exclusively for girls.

Not relevant to the basic argument about the acceptability of gender neutral toilet facilities, but still relevant to any discussion about legality.

My socket set was Britool as were most of my spanners. After I joined Trident Tankers as a Lecky in 1968 they didn't get a lot of use as I mostly flew to join/leave a ship. They got a bit more use when I came ashore to work for Babcock Controls for just over two years, then not a lot for the rest of my working life as I became an Elect/Mech engineer surveyor for a couple of the major UK composite insurers.

Most of that work was to find the faults and write a report so that someone else could do the hard work of actually fixing the problems. :-)

What do they do on trains, cross their legs?

Some folk need to get a life if this is a major worry to them..
I think he’s trying to wrest the woke crown off Alan, he’s a bit to go yet. :)

I'm sure I'm not the only one that its happened to ( more than once)
Stood at a urinal, in the gents, doing what comes naturally, and a woman or 2 have walked in, proclaiming
that they are busting, but there is a massive queue for the ladies.

Doesn't / didn't bother me in the slightest, when you gotta go, you gotta go!
So it would seem that its OK for the gents to become "gender neutral" if there is a queue for the ladies.

Which is more of a statement about the provision of toilets at venues, compared with the audience.

Was at a football stadium for a gig recently. Blokes had no problem going for a pee, given the provision of men’s loos, but massive queues for the women. They could have re designated some loos as womens. As it happens, there were loads of women using the mens.
