Guy's this has probably been asked a million times and i'm away to research it as soon as i've posted this thread but i value the TP'ers thoughts on these things so ill ask and hopefully find out plenty from you guys.

I was just about to purchase a 580ex mk2 second hand and i was wondering if i would be better firing this from radio triggers (cheap ones) or buying an long ETTL cable which seems like a good idea but is expensive and might get in my way at some stage.

Are there any wireless triggers that can keep the ETTL connection between my 50d and 580 ex mk2 without me spending a fortune or would i maybe be better purchasing a cheaper flash gun and spending a little more on ETTL triggers?

I've been away from this for a couple of years really so i know things might have changed significantly since i was buying cheap triggers from Flash in the Pan.

I am having tremendous fun with one flash and annoying the bejesus out of my family on holiday by experimenting with these.
 
Even a long cable will still restrict you.
Go with the YN622C, best bang for your buck!
 
Right folks am i right in thinking that my 580 ex mk1 won't work with these as the following description say's it's only compatible with the ex mk2 flashes?

The new YN-622 fits perfectly in the Yongnuo product line and will be first available for Canon DSLR, probably later for Nikon. Compatible are all flashes by Yongnuo and Canon's EX II flashes.
 
They'll fire your flash in ettl mode with complete control from the camera, however, to use manual mode, you'd have to adjust power on the remote flashgun. So they're not 'completely compatible' but far from useless, and actually better than most triggers as far as control goes.
 
I would not want cables. They are trip hazard and will eventually be the cause of something nasty.

Those triggers are interesting solution. They will dumb-fire mk1 flashes (what I have), and then you could use Canon's own IR system to trigger some more flashes in a chain (this is what I'll do till I upgrade to mk2s). Or just use Canon system, and ideally a few 600 EX RT (too expensive really)
