Wireless flash sync problem

Yes
I'm using these "ebay" triggers with a Canon 430EXII and a 420EZ.

I bought the 420EZ (because its old and cheap) to use as a secondary flashgun for strobing gels and patterns onto walls while the 430EXII is used as main flash for subject. I know the 420EZ is not fully compatible with the digital EOS range but firing it on manual i wouldn't have thought this would matter.

My problem is that the 420EZ will not sync with shutter speeds above 1/30 sec so when taking the shot the second flash looks like it hasn't fired when it has.
The wireless triggers have a sync speed upto 1/500 sec supposedly.

If anyone can figure this out i'd be grateful as i'm pulling my hair out

Hmm, 2 days no reply.
Either i haven't explained it very well or it really is a mystery.
Worth a single bump before the 420EZ goes back on eBay

Do a search on Strobist, the 420EZ seems to be quite problematical when used with Ebay triggers :(

Thanks for the reply. I've come across a few pages on strobist and flickr through google searches but all the problems were due to misfiring. I don't seem to have a misfire problem. It just doesn't seem to sync above 1/30 (it definately fires i just don't know it its before or after the curtain).

A little frustrating as this flash is listed compatible with these triggers :bang:

I guess i was hoping that with all the members on this forum someone might be using the same triggers with the same flash

I use cheapo ebay triggers and used to have a Centon flash from back in the day. When triggering they seemed very sluggish and sometimes wouldn't fire at all. I now have a 430 EX II and don't recall a single misfire. I can trigger this happily up to 1/250th.

I don't know enough about the technicalities to explain this but some of the older flahes just don't seem responsive enough when used with wireless triggers. I would suggest returning the 420 and getting one of those Vivitars that are often mentioned by strobist, Zack Arias etc.
