Does anyone have any recommendation on Windows based backup software? A free one would be preferred.

All I want to do is replicate a set of directories onto my external USB drive. So if it could remind me to do it also that would be a plus.

Hmm, what else, obviously only backup changes but also notice that I've deleted stuff from my main drive and replicate those changes in my backup device. Rsync-like for Unix-bods who are in the know! lol ;)

Any suggestions? :)

Could always create a briefcase on the usb drive, drag the folders you want copied over to it, it makes a copy, and then all you do is ask it to resync the contents, and it will copy over any new subfolders created within the original folders you dragged over.

It sometimes looks like it has hung while comparing just leave it and it will sort itself out, oh this is part of Windows so is free, may not be the best but it works ! :)

Oh, do a quick search in windoze help, it explains how to set it up and everything ;)

Replicating deletions doesn't sound like a good idea to me. You accidentally delete some stuff you wanted...realise a week later it is gone....meanwhile you have updated your copy and have no backup anymore.

Hmm, good point there Rob....

I'll have a look into that Ian, thanks!

But when used with a regular backup system - chances of accidental deletions should have little if any impact.

One thing I would remind people is even when using these pendrive devices, and other portable USB storage, is to always have a backup somewhere.

The number of times people have lost these devices and their data, or the device has even failed - although rare compared to the old 3.5" floppy disks, I still find that these do fail from time to time, and also can be damaged.

Totally agree, i have a work supplied pen drive that has failed, luckily its only used for a specific job and a backup isnt needed !

That looks like a great program fingerz. I am going to download that and give it a go.

Thanks a lot!!!

Anytime. I can't remember if the Pro version costs money but if it does, I might have one of those unlimited free trials you sometimes find knocking about ( ;) ).

Once you get a nice little set of sync rules set up, you can take advantage of the command line option to run them automatically on startup/shutdown/specified times etc. Really handy.

I think its shareware and if I use it I don't mind paying a reasonable amount :)
