iv got windows xp installed at the moment but when try and install vista it runs through the install then when it restarts after the install it just hangs.

Im not sure why.

my motherboard is an asus P5NE-SLI
processor is a q6600
the hard drive is connected through IDE... not sure if that is the problem.
 
IDE shouldn't make any difference.

Either your Vista disc is U/S or you might be trying to upgrade instead of a fresh installation.
 
Then select fresh install when it comes up.
 
Not sure I'd want to upgrade XP to Vista, I'd either stick to XP or jump to Win7 if it was my choice to make.

Agree, it's just preparing you for what is in store once you have 'upgraded'.
 
I understand that as you have Vista, you want to install it, but I agree with Hugh - stick with XP or go to Windows 7. Must admit I haven't really got on with 7, but that is probably my fault as I've not used it much.

I can't see Vista has any advantages over XP. On my PC XP which sits in the background and does what it should, does not eat resources, and has never crashed. Microsoft are continuing support for XP until April 2014 and by then something else could be along.

I don't understand all these claims of XP and Vista being no different.

Vista had its issues, which 7 has mostly eliminated, but I still see Vista as a much improved OS over XP. Going back to XP after using Vista is an absolute nightmare. The start menu alone is worth upgrading for.
 
well i make music and windows 7 has a lot of issues with some of the programs i use.

the screen that hangs is black with corporation written on it.

Storage drivers. You need to get the drivers for your motherboard in an appropriate format and when it says F5 or F6 to add storage drivers... add them.

Failing that it'll almost certainly work without incident in Win7 setup.

Vista usually fails before selecting the destination drive if it's storage drivers.

If its failing at the animated ms corp page it's probably other driver related, try the clean install first it might be something left over from the previous install.

Thought you only had to do that with SATA drives?

i did and it then says loading windows files then it tries to boot in to the previous install and hangs at the same screen.
 
Only ditch it and install Windows 7 instead :-)
 
Only thing I can suggest is to get rid of any partitions, reformat and start another fresh install.

Plenty of free tools to do this.

i have no OS on there now. Im really in a pickle at the moment with it.
 
Hirens contains proprietary code - it breaches copyright of a few companies, let alone most of the tools being completely out of date.

Are you sure your Vista disc is okay? The only time I've experienced the same problem as this was when using a badly scratched disc.

Don't need one, just use another PC/laptop to download Hirens and burn it to a CD.

yeah its fine not a scratch on the disc.
