Here is what comes on at start up.

Any ideas of what I can tell it not to use, ergo non critical. It seems to be taking longer to start up at the moment. So I am giving it the once over! :gag:

Thanks.

Diego.

Nothing particularly bad would happen if you turned it all off - but you may want to keep some stuff, notably AVG7_CC.

The two red, I would keep.
Those in blue, I'm not too sure whether they're system critical, The top two blue are part of your sound card software, and the third is part of the ATI drivers.

I'd try getting rid of them personally but I'm not too sure if theyd have an effect on the actual haardware.

The green one I would personally keep, because I like MSN starting on startup.

I would get rid of the rest...useless crap.:p

Oops just noticed theres two mouse ones there that should also be blue (ie Errr. make sure before you delete them)

Do you really need Blueyonder PC Guard as well as AVG?

I'd uninstall PC guard and stop Itunes coming up on startup, (ituneshelper).

Other than that, try a defrag as Joe suggested and just look at your free space on C:

I periodically reset up my PC every 6 months or so because I find thats the most efficient way to keep it running properly - I wouldn't recommend that everyone does this though as it can be a pain to do and a disaster if you don't manage to grab all of your personal files before you nuke the thing.

Windows has this habit of slowly building up rubbish and grinding to a halt - go into add/remove programs in control panel and uninstall anything in there that you don't really use.

Grab some anti spyware software from the web - either spybot search and destroy, adaware, microsoft defender or ewido (free from the AVG site).

Hth,

Matt

I find Messenger can take an eternity to load on start up. I actually load it manually after the PC has booted - much quicker.

Well, it's been a good three years since I last did a "format C:" and reinstalled Windows from scratch. I used to do it every 9 months or so cause my machine got bogged down with so much crap. I guess it's a testimony to McAfee anti-virus, Ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destroy. (and maybe even Windows? *shock*gasp*horror*)

I've been looking for an excuse to do it recently as I wanted to swap my old system HDD (5200rpm) with another HDD (7200rpm), and I finally did it yesterday evening. :D

Right after a clean Windows install, the boot up time is about 45 seconds. After loading all the crap, now it takes about 2 minutes. :bang:

Well, it's a new start on the road to Windows grinding to a halt again after some time.

I reformatted last week.

Dunno why but you just cant beat the clean feeling of a freshly installed Windows, it's like a nice refreshing shower :D

mmm shower.

What I do also kamion - if your bios supports this is to make your pc turn itself on 5 minutes before you get up and make it auto login using your user details. By the time I've woken up and gone to the loo, its booted up and ready for me to check my mail :)

Or do what I do and leave it on 24/7 ;)

I reboot mine about once a week. rest of the time when I leave it I hit windows key then u then s and it goes into standby. When I come back to it press the power button and it is back up in 5 seconds.

If I'm doing something with it - ie downloading then I'll leave it on, but if I'm not using it I'll turn it off. If I'm not leaving it to do anything and its back on before I wake up its all good :P

LOL...

I just use my Mac Mini at home and don't have any of the above :)

But work drives me bonkers !!!!!

Carl.

the ATI is handy to keep running, I dont know why but I do, its on a delay so shouldnt affect startup.

Other than that I agree with Marcel. Checkup them 2 anon EXE files, random stuff like that in your sys folder (there is no path...) isnt a great thing.

Searching...
alcmtr.exe is a process installed alongside Realtek AC97 audio hardware and provides a monitoring service. This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems. (quote) - So just close it :p
rthdcpl.exe - some audio "effects" control, says its needed but I dont see why. Try manually closing that process in windows and see how your sound functions.
