Been using an Olympus EPL 5, and have recently been converted to photoing in RAW format (.ORF)

Windows photos has always opened these RAW format photos, as did Windows Photo Viewer.

I have just upgraded the camera to an Olympus OM EM10, and continue to shoot in RAW.

But now Windows photos can't open the .orf photos dammit, and I can't get Windows Viewer to work at all (Works with Jpegs)

I now have to use the Olympus Viewer 3 to just look at the photos. Bit slow to load, but have a preference to use the Windows software for viewing.

Any ideas??

Also just notices that the picture properties in .ORF file are limited. Does not give the camera type etc.

However once processed and saved to a jpeg, these properties are shown.

Must be tweak in the camera I think

There might be a Windows ms download for raw files you can install, I remember having to do this a while ago for Windows 7. There might be another one perhaps?

There's not been an update for Windows Raw Codec since 2014. I ended up installing a third party one when I upgraded to Windows 10. Can't remember what it was now though, but do some Googling.

It adds a stage to processing but you could convert your raw files to DNG format using Adobe DNG Converter - it's a free download. Assuming Windows Photo recognises DNG files?

Thanks Ian. Never heard of DNG format though.

I really want a viewer that can see my RAW's just to look at them. Oddly with the epl5 I could do.

I would have thought the later Olympus camera would have the same formatted RAW output.

Most odd:(:(

I have looked for Codecs, but don't feel it's wise yo download anything except from Microsoft. I had my fingers burnt and suffered various virus's from downloading free programmes a few months ago.

The Olympus viewer it is then.........

Thanks for comments anyway.

Two suggestions 1:- Read the Manual or 2:- Contact Olympus

Adobe is not likely to include viruses in their software, being the market leader in this sort of thing. Good luck sorting out your problem.

Thanks Keith, I will look it when back on the PC

I did look for a codec on the web, and tried to install a file. But chickened out halfway through.

The next day the pooter was hijacked with ransomeware.............................

Fortunately I had made a restore point and was able to go back to it

2nd time its happened to me now.

Google Faststone. Download their photo viewer. It's free and works well.

Thanks again. Will try both when back on the Pc

Using the Surface whilst away from home, which means I have no programme to see piccies.

There are several programmes in the app store and am wading through those at the mo.

Don't really understand why the E-M10 is different from the epl 5 Raw format..

Progress they call it!!

Why would the new camera have the same raw format as the old?

It's raw, ie a file containing the sensor reading and settings. To have the same file format you'd need the same sensor.

H'mmm Had not thought of that one.

In my ignorance of camera data, I would have thought the designers would have tried to make them compatible, certainly to the main computer manufacturers standard software.

Again thanks for comments, Fastpficture viewer works well, and actually adds the codec so that Windows Picture Viewer works.

Still to crack it for the Surface laptop/tablet, but suspect that's a dead duck as its the RT version.

Thanks all
