Anyone else find Windows 8 just freezing sometimes ?

I am not sure if its Win 8 problem or the classic shell/traditional start program that is to blame.

Anyone have these freezes ? they don't happen to often but annoying as hell when they do, cant do anything and even CTRL + ALT + DEL to bring up taskbar does nothing

I have looked at event viewer but that only seems to say the power was interrupted and that is me turning the power button off

Is it whilst you are doing the same things?
Was this computer running Windows 7 / XP before? If so were there any changes made prior to install & did it ever freeze under previous OS?
Have you got all drivers updated to latest versions?
What is the spec of everything (including the power supply)?

There will be more questions but some more info is required for an intelligent response.

I've installed Win 8 on four different laptops and a PC, of various vintages, specs and original OS versions, and see no such problems on any of them. I always vanilla install. I don't agree with upgrades over an existing OS as I have no wish to preserve any existing bloat or errors. A clean slate usually does wonders for most systems.

That said, my newest and most highly specced laptop takes a great dislike to my Expresscard CF reader if there is no flash card present and presents symptoms much as you describe. That's not an OS problem though. It's something at the BIOS/hardware level, affecting only the new machine. As soon as I remove the reader or insert a card everything is peachy.

I have Win8 on a new build with Classic Shell and not one bit of hesitation or lag. Absolutely perfect!

Its a new laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed. The specs of the laptop are:

HP ENVY dv7
8 GB RAM
Core i7 Processor
Nvidia Geforce GT 630m

Just did it again a few moments ago.....

OK just noticed the add-on for the start button is called 'Classic Start Menu' maybe I should try another like 'classic shell' ?

Only problem I have with Windows 8 is that either BF3 or the ATI driver has a memory leak :( Still not fixed!

There have been a number of reports by users who have had all sorts of issues with Windows 8. Some have gone back to Windows 7. Obviously not an option in your case.
Get a bench mark tool and run tests on your hardware, you might have a component that is not performing right.
OK I've not used Windows 8 yet, but I would imagine it still has an event viewer, on previous version in classic menu style, right click my computer and choose manage - look for event viewer and system events, see if there are any errors reported.
benchmark tool

The last few HP laptops I've had have some really good built in diagnostics you access by pressing a key (F12??) on boot up. Run a memory and HDD test at minimum.

Problem with these sorts of faults is that it could be literally anything, from poor device drivers, faulty ram or HDD or even a overheating problem.

Try installing the latest video card drivers, just in case if you can too.

Thanks everyone for the hints and ideas, I have looked at event viewer but it just seemed to show the error of me manually switching the laptop off with power button. I will run a few scans and see what happens.

I installed a BIOS update last night from the HP site so see if that may help to
