Can anyone give me some guidance here..Today i got my daughter a new Dell laptop..Windows 7 64bit..she uses a router at home to share the internet with 3 other family members, they are using XP 32bit(hope this making sense).
The upshot is--the Belkin router is not compatible with 64bit systems so no internet for the new laptop :'( i have searched Belkin for drivers etc.but they have nothing for 64bit,short of buying another brand of router does anyone know a way round this problem..
I know you Techies can help me..:D
Thanking you in anticipation..her Facebook awaits..

is there any sort of compatability mode you could run the drivers in ?

I did it when my printer wouldn't work with 64bit

just a thought

Similar to Neil, ive not heard of a router not being compatible with an operating system.
Have you tried to connect to it wirelessly?
If that is the case however then maybe a firmware update to the router may help

belkin router not compatible with an operating system?

do you mean belkin wireless stick? if so can you not use the onboard wireless on the laptop?
Thanks for the quick reply Neil..no its not a wireless stick, when i tried to connect the laptop with the router its saying not compatible with win7 64 bit,it also says that on belkins site.

Yes tried to connect wirelessly, belkins say there are no updates for win7,sorry im not very pc literete, hope im making sense.

what is the part number on the router?

no, router will be compatible with anything from phones to mac/linux/windows as long as the OS supports however the router is talking to it.

Is the problem the laptop not having wifi and not liking the old dongle like neil said

I found vista didn't like to share printers or files with xp, since moving 7 I'v scrapped the xp machines and upgraded the vista ones so I couldn't tell you with 7

you shouldn't need to install the router with the laptop (wrote last reply before reading yours)

the router should broadcast an ssid that the laptop picks up neither should care what or who the other is. Can you post a link to where it says it on the belkin site please

Click Me

The link above shows that your router is combatible with Win 7 64bit. - Edit - Laurie bet me to it.

The problem will most likely be with the wireless adapter for the laptop. Are you using the built in Wireless or are you using a USB Wireless Adapter?
Built in wireless

The ethernet socket on the broadband modem has the router plugged into it

Yes but you don't need to plug it (the laptop wired connection) directly into the modem, that's what the router is for. There are usually 2/4 sockets on the back of the router for wired connections as well.

The cable comes in the wall, plugs into the cable modem, ethernet cable connects between the modem and the router..i think

If you're using the built in wireless in Windows 7 there should be a wireless icon in the bottom right. If you click this a list of available wireless networks should appear, click the one you want then connect and it should ask for the router key. There is no reason that you would need to install any router software. If there is no wireless icon I'd guess that you need to enable the wireless which will either be a switch on the side, a standalone button or a combination of a key and the function button.

Do this first, if that doesn't work then check the drivers and make sure there is one installed first of all. Go to device manager, then network adapters, should be listed in there - if it has triangle with exclamation mark, there is no driver or there is a fault or something.

If all else fails you can get a USB Adapter for £10 of the net. For example: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Edimax-EW-7711UTN-Wireless-nLITE-Super-Mini-USB-Adapter-150Mbps

Oh another thought is check your trying to connect using the correct encryption settings. Click the wireless icon in the bottom right, right click your wireless network name, then click properties and check the Security Type and Encryption Type boxes. Make sure they are correct.

If you can see your router's SSID then that means your laptop's built in wireless is working. Its just a matter of Security type and encryption type as Craig said. Also check that the router's MAC address filtering is not enabled, otherwise, you have to manually input your laptop's MAC address (on the router) before you can connect it.

Good luck

Just like to thank everyone for all the help you guys gave me last night, must admit i was a bit confused with all the help and assistance..so i called a mate who is in IT and he came round this evening and did it all for me in about 20 mins....thanks again..:)
